72 XLT glove box lock question

72 XLT glove box lock question
I have a 72 Ranger XLT that is very clean and mostly original. The door locks and ignition key use the same key and appear to be originals. When I bought the truck it also came with what looked like a double sided passenger car trunk key. I almost tossed the odd key but I finally figured out that this key fits the tiny dash glove box lock. The extra glove box beneath the air condition is also tiny but does not have a lock.
My question is the glove box lock original to the truck? It seems like a waste having a tiny locking glove box using an extra key.
Thanks, Jason

These trucks share a lot of parts with Mustangs. In passenger cars, the glove box lock is the same as the trunk. You'll notice the offset in the key is opposite the door key so it's not like it could be re-keyed to use the door style blank. Dang it, now I have to find another one for my truck. I already have one for my Mustang. As to original, all I can add is it's highly likely. These are actually fairly common in the full sized cars and can be re-keyed by any competent locksmith. I think they are available repro now too, but I like the hunt.
