High output alternator

Since it seems that rjm has disappeared where are you guys getting your alternators from? I found a site that has some high outputs up to 250a...Ford 3G high output alternator high amp replacemen but I'm sure how the quality is.

Do you want an 8.25" 3G, or do you have that weird 'Y' shaped mount?

This one?

DB Electrical - ALTERNATOR FORD F SERIES TRUCK 4.9L 94 95 96 / 7.5L 95 96 97

That is a regular 8 1/4" mount 130A, with 3:00 clocking, shown for '94-'97.

Same as a '90-'93 3.8l Taurus/Sable except the back case needs to be rotated, and the extension needs to be removed.
As you can see:

Yes it will work.
You will need a fused charge cable and to modify your regulator plug.
If you go the junkyard route you can get the cable and fuse from the donor.

Getting rid of my wimpy, failure prone 2G was the best thing I ever did for my truck.

Well latemodelrestoration.com is where I got mine.
Excellent customer service.
When I Recieved my kit, the alt had a bent spindle.
I explained and showed them pictures and they sent me another free of charge.
Absolutly no hassle at all.
I Highly Recommend them.
The kit includes everything including the weather tight crimp connectors.

That is a LOT of amperage to push out of a small case 3G!
Is there a reason you need 200A?

It will work with the harness mods outlined above, but your 6 rib belt will never drive 200A.
Ryan used to have drive ratings on his website and said that was one reason he would never sell an alternator over 160A. (except the Mitsu ambulance alternator)

Dad used to run dual batteries with a 200A alternator but to charge both, run all the electrical and run an electric hydraulic plow. The 2 batteries and the plow sucked up a lot of juice.

Batteries don't "suck" any power.
They are simply a reservoir.

It would take no current at all to keep them charged.
A winch or electric/hydraulic plow, OTOH, needs the extra amp hours of those batteries to keep voltage steady in the system.

Nope not really. Just to have the power for no reason. I know a 160 amp is well capable of handling my power needs but if were going to pay $200 for an alternator why not go for the big one.

Why not buy a 130A for ~$85?
That would still be twice the output of your current alternator.

The thing I like about having a 3G is that it is charging at idle.
No more dimming of the headlights while stopped and the blower on high.
A 160W stereo can only draw about 12A max... :\

Ford intended the 130A 3G's for vehicles that had electric fans sucking 30+A constantly. (up to 90A inrush spike)
It is when you start using something like a plow or winch (see Slashfan's comment) that you need some real power.

Spend the $ if you like but -if you never need it and can't drive it- it is doing as much good as gluing a $150 bill to a 130A alternator, IMHO.

Hello and good morning.

I recently purchased a 130 AMP for $66.50 with free shipping from eBay.

I just sent the seller a message for contact information so I will let you know when he returns the information. He has (7) 3G 130 AMP Alternators for $61.50 with free shipping. He also has several others for cars, foreign and domestic.

These are American Made; remanufactured with a 1 year warranty.

Perhaps you could send me a PM with your contact information unless you do not feel comfortable with this request.

Take care.

Boon
