Idea from Germany and problems with the 4x4 drive
Hello
I'm Michael from Germany and I live in the vicinity of Berlin.
Got myself a new object fun in the garage a week ago. It is a 1957 F100 4x4 with a 6.6 liter engine.
As with us now the winter has come. Did I even tried the all-wheel drive. But it discovers, from about 40 miles in 4H mode is a metallic noise in the Near area. Sounds more to the left wheel. In 2H mode can not hear anything and the sound is present only in the lock of the front wheel hubs.
Can you now in 4H mode not drive faster than 40 miles or my guess is the left latch does not lock properly.
Does anyone know the problem?
Thank you and greetings from Germany
Micha
PS: Unfortunately, my English skills are not good. so please understanding, if not everything is spelled correctly.

Welcome here, your english is OK.
Your truck is not stock, as in 1957 the F100 did not offer 4x4 or a 6.6 liter engine, but I will try to help. Try this - with the front hubs in the lock postition and the truck in 2H, do you still get the noise? Or do you only get it in 4H? One thing to look at would be the universal joint on theside the noise is coming from, especially if you get the noise whenever the front hubs are locked. Another thing to look at is the bearings that support the driving shaft where it passed thru the spindle.
If the front axle is the open knuckle style (if you can see the universal joint) it is easy to inspect the universal joint. If it is the closed knuckle style the easy way to check the universal joint is to raise the side making the noise so you can rotate the tire, then lock the other front tire to keep it from rotating (with both hubs locked) and also keep the front drive shaft from rotating. The tire that you rotate should not rotate very much (maybe 15°) and there should be no grinding noise in the knuckle.
I hope that this helps you.

Greetings and welcome Micha. I agree that you are going to have to isolate the noise by locking the hubs and rotating the tires one at a time. You could also take out the front drive shaft to narrow it down to the t-case or front axle. I spent a few years in Germany, 89-91 and loved it. Someday I will make it back across the pond. You also asked about a manual. I suggest you get a factory 1957 Ford Truck service manual. They are pretty easy to come by here in the states but Germany might be different. Try ebay i quess. It wont help with any of your 4x4 stuff as yours is not factory, but will help will most everything else.
