Power Steering Pump-Help Me Please

Hello. I am new to Ford Truck enthusiasts but I joined because I am doing the timing chains and cam phaser project on my 2005 F-150 with the 5.4. My problem is the power steering pump. This is definitely holding me up. Does anybody know any tricks or have any advice to get the power steering lines off and getting the pump out. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You have to remove the pulley and the resevoir then you can get access to all the bolts and hoses. I've replaced mine 4 times now and can change it out in less than an hour. It isn't bad after the first time.

You'll need a special 'power steering pump pulley' puller set - maybe you can rent or borrow one. I had to replace the pump pulley on my '07 because I ran over some debris that managed to get run around the pump pulley under the belt, breaking the plastic pulley loose from its metal hub. I don't have that puller, so I hired a mechanic to replace the pulley and drive belt - I bought the parts. The pulley was $43 from the dealer. It took him quite a while to do it even with the right tools. Because I was able to get the truck home, it was cheaper to have the 'mobile mechanic' come to the house than it would have been to truck it to a shop. He had to remove the fan and shroud to do it, and its a V6 with a lot more room up front. I don't envy you that job on a V8.

Thank you. I did "lease" the pulley puller from my local auto parts store and I got it off with no problems. But the hoses are just infuriating me. The reservoir line and the return hose will absolutely not come off. They are just rubber hoses and should pull off but there is a lot of rust and corrosion around them and they will absolutely not budge for me. A friend of mine told me to try putting just a little bit of heat to them to break them loose so I may try that. I would cut them off but I'm not paying $150 to replace 2 rubber hoses. Thanks for the info

I did get the puller and believe it or not the pulley came off without a problem. I was amazed. But the reservoir line and the return line will not come off the pump. They are corroded and rusted pretty bad and they should just pull off but they are too bad. I am going to try putting a tiny bit of heat to them and see if that helps break them loose. It's really frustrating because I am replacing the cam phasers and timing chains and that whole big job and the power steering lines are holding me up. Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it.

I use a 10mm reversible gearwrench to get the bolt under the pressure line. I can take the pump off without disconnecting any hoses or removing the pulley. The top 2 bolts can be reached with a 10mm 1/4" drive swivel socket.

Worked perfectly!!! All the lines are still attached and the pump came off without any problems at all. That allowed me to get the timing chain cover off and I have started the process of switching the phasers, chains, seals and some other stuff on the engine. The job should be done in another day or so. Thanks again for all your help. I really appreciate it more than you know.
