1979 f250 400M headers?

Hey Guys anyone running headers on their 400? Iam installing new exhaust and figured i would put headers on, but I have seen some that go outside the frame but i would like them inside the frame rails. Any help would be great. Size, brand, part #

I got a decent set from jcwhitney. Don't remember the brand but they are 2 1/4 collectors only cost around 180 bucks and have been on and off several times in the last 3 years with no issue with rotting or warping. Only issue I see is on my 77 they are very close to the transmission cross member. Hope that helps

Can I ask why you feel this way? Unless you are talking shorty headers?

IMO inside the frame long tube exit headers are a PITA. I know I had a set one time on a 4x4 F150, NEVER AGAIN. All I can say is tons of clearance issues.

Some brands you have to jack up the motor to get them in. Some go on both sides of the r/H motor mount, some cage your starter in so you have to remove the header to change a starter. WTH?

They can make for a real PITA to finish the rest of the exhaust. Causing you to have to pay more $$ for your exhaust guy to wrestle around, thru or under the crossmember and then around the d/s xfer case to get it split back over for a in front of the tire exit.

It you have duel tanks PITA again, depending on the lift, front d/s can hit, if its a manual trans another PITA. Just say no, or tell me something I do not know, which is always a possibility. Cause I do not know everything, but I know NOT to use inside the frame exit headers for sure. lol

Fenderwell exits are easy to put on and the way to go IMO. I have a set of cheap ol Hedman's on my red 4x4 F250 351M (same block as 400 right?) was a piece of cake to install and finish exhaust. I have 2 sets of L&L for future projects.

Also cheaper on the rest of the exhaust cause no real bends are required just one for the turn down.

You can spend a little or a lot, Hedman, Sanderson, L&L (BB swap headers), Hooker, Jegs, Summit, JC Whitney......

My 71 Bronco w/302 has a set of inside the frame shorties, cause they were new and came with it. Again PITA to finish the exhaust to tuck it up under the truck.....

And here are the pics to back it up. F150 or 250 inside the frame rail, still look like a good idea?

And the black truck has an easy and cheaper completed exhaust, but not a cheap and LOUD as the red mud truck.

I put stacks on later for even more obnoxious-ness. lol

Thanks for the pics, and yes I see what your saying with the inside frame headers, Ill for sure be going with outside rail header, or keep it simple and leave the stock exhaust manifold on. Thanks for the replies

Yes that what this site if for IMO, keeps you from winding up with some inside the frame rail headers exiting right at the cross member and going "Damn, now what".

But keep in mind they must not be all that bad, lots of folks sale them and use them, so....

What headers did you end up getting? I have a 78 f250 w/ a 400m and the exhaust manifold is leaking.. Was gonna try and fix but gonna go the header route.

Yes I am in a jam here here also. My drivers exhaust is cracked, of course 2 of the bolts broke off in the head during disassembly. So i.m probably just going to pull the head instead of the whole engine, I,m looking at the Hedman fenderwell headers part #89360 from summit racing $221. Can I still use the plastic inner fenders?
