Well I hate to admit it but I've hit another milestone birthday. I knew my wife had been planning something for quite some time to celebrate the occasion. Last night I got the big reveal and she has planned a Route 66 Road Trip for the two of us this Summer from Chicago to LA! She's also arranged to rent a convertible to cruise in! I'm a lucky guy and she is truly my better half. So as wonderful as this gesture was and as shocked as I was two questions immediately came to mind... 1) Will the convertible be a Mustang? and 2) How many FTE'ers can I meet up with on the trip? So... keep your eye out for a follically challenged guy in a Mustang cruising Route 66 this Summer trying not to let his wife see him looking behind every shed for the next truck to follow him home!

 

Rob congrats on making it to the half century mark. Been there and done that a long time ago but remember it was a fun time in life. As far as getting another truck on the trip just blame old age or say after all it was her idea for the trip

 

Central Avenue in Albuquerque is Route 66, we can gather up all the FTE faithful to welcome you! I "think" Bobby may know a bar or two where you can quench your thirst, and if you want a place for a night or two, you're welcome at my place.

Check out Elk City, OK, it has the "National Route 66 Museum" (as do about 20 other towns around there), and I can recommend the Flamingo Motel there, it's a day's drive from ABQ. In fact there are a lot of Rte66 places in NM, I can help if you need it. (I can also tell you where the "good" boneyards are)

50 is no big deal, you don't even get a discount at IHOP! Congrats tho!

 

The big day is just another reason you need to get your truck running Seriously, enjoy your trip and all the FTE folks along the way.

First, the title of this post: OT: The Big Five-Ohhh / Am I Nuts? - Turning 50 has nothing to do with you being nuts - You've proved that by the old Truck madness
Second, You have a hell of a good Lady for doing this + putting up with the old Truck madness (When I turned 50 ny wife bought me a new dishwasher, not the human type, that I had to pay for)
Third, Last time I was out that way there was a lot of old iron on some of the side roads - Do an in depth Google Earth scan of the route and whats just off it, I still want to get a car hauler and go collecting - I saw a bunch of stuff near Altus which is south of 66

 

Route 66 runs right through OKC here. If I'm in town I'd be happy to meet you somewhere for lunch.

Congrats Rob, my five-oh was a year ago last December. I finally got the birthday party I never had. I just have to wait another 50 years for the next birthday party.

Although I had a great time at my party with family and friends I sure wish my wife had planned a road trip like yours did. Very lucky man.

Congrats Rob, welcome to the club. I honestly think that trip would go better in an F-250 with a trailer in tow. There are so many great yards and out-of-the-way side trips that the trailer would be a required addition imho. The NM guys will steer you right, but one of my favorite Route 66 stops is the El Commodore restaurant in Moriarity. Straight out of the 1950s. Also a great old truck (so called) "museum" there. Pat and I both tried really hard to remember back sooooo far to our 50th birthdays. That was a really long time ago for us. We knew your wife was a keeper when we met her at your get together. Your both great people and hope you enjoy every mile of the trip.

Just think of all the rental car savings you'd have by driving a truck with a trailer behind. The savings might pay for that new truck to follow you home...

 

Rob, congratulations on reaching 50, not everybody does. You should really enjoy driving 66. Arizona has more of it remaining than the other states and the longest continuous stretch, I have driven it many times. Was talking with a friend just yesterday about making the route 66 run May 2-4 from Seligman to Oatman AZ. Let everybody know when you will be coming through, I work 50' from 66 in Flagstaff.
