Alternative replacement carburetor for Carter?

On the Fordsix Performance Forum, a member who was happy with "stock" was bemusing the fact that the Carter carburetor is now old and most of the time has been rebuilt many times and may or may not have the original parts and calibration.

He was investigating a Mikuni 48mm downdraft used in jet ski application. Apparantly, it is a one barrel with constant velocity. At 48mm, it is slightly larger than the 1 3/4" Carter.

While searching the web, I ran across a company in California which has on their website a page stating they have a new Zenith carburetor to replace the Carter. They specifically list it as being applicable for use on the 300 Ford six cylinder.

The Zenith model # is 228 and it is stated that "stock fuel line, linkage and air cleaner will fit".

I will list a link to their website. Look to the left side of the page and go to #14 [New Zenith Carter replacement]. Also, go to #16 [Three 1 barrel Zenith] which shows the model #228 Zenith.

They have the height as being 5 1/2"; the throttle bore @ 1 9/16"; throttle I.D. @ 2" and mounting studs center to center as being 2 3/4".

Carburetors for Cars & Trucks

I emailed them @ www.carbsonly.com and quickly had a response from Carlos Vasquez. He told me, currently, they only have one with manual choke. He said that the carburetors are durable and easy to adjust. I told him I would share this information with forum members.

They have sold sets of 2 or 3 carburetors for Chevy engines like the 235 or 261.

The price for the Model #228 with manual choke was quoted as $649.00 plus $18.00 shipping.

That's $649 for three Zenith carbs or one?

Jeg's sells an Offy intake, 390 holley, and header combo for ~$700. Just sayin'.

Sorry for the delayed response, Baron...

Today, I inquired of Carlos, from whom I received the quote and it is indeed for [1] carburetor!!!

Can you imagine the setups pictured on the web page of [2] and [3] of these carburetors plus the cost of the appropriate manifold... probably $1500 - 2200.
