02-05 Sport Trac, Issues?

Going to make the plunge into the Ford Explorer Sport Trac and looking at the models 02-05 for my price range. I plan on doing a fair amount of beach driving and the occansional trip up to vermont/new hampshire to snowboard. This truck will not be my DD. Any tips on the better of the model years listed? I am going to look at a 2003 today with 96k miles. What should I look for/test out before I buy, other then the normal rust/leaks that a 10 yo car would have?

Any major problems with these years or reliability issues?

Any and all comments are appreciated. Thanks guys

Can't seem to find too much on how they handle/hold up on the beach. Any input on that would be appreciated as well.

Thanks that link is pretty helpful.

As with any vehicle rust prevention is always an issue. I don't believe the ST is any better or worse than other vehicles. Ford used a composite bed for this very reason and to reduce weight. Highly recommend 2003-05 models as they are equpped with rear disc brakes and upgraded timing chain tensioners. Number one concern with all Gen 1 ST's is the 5R55E transmission, past maintenance and service records are of utmost importance. Research undercoating the vehicle and check these web sites. Good luck.
