Flywheel Replacement

Got a couple teeth missing in one of the 4 stopping spots on my flywheel, so I have to replace it on my truck. I don't have a whole lot of money, but since im going to have the flywheel off the vehicle, is there anything else that I should replace? Also, where would be the smartest place to buy a flywheel for it. I really don't think buying something like that at autozone or advance would be a good idea, or would it be ok? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Automatic trucks have a flexplate instead of a flywheel. The flexplates on the 7.3 has been known to crack from time to time so make sure you source a new replacement piece (vs a used part).

Ford did issue a TSB regarding concerns while replacing the flexplate. You want to check the flexplate reinforcing plate and crankshaft spacer and replace those items if damaged. Theck out TSB 99-23-6 for more details.

And for your sake dont purchase something as important as a flywheel at the big box of china parts houses. Consider an upgraded aftermarket unit vs used from some of the well known flywheel/flex-plate vendors. Jegs, Summit or Ford specialty houses. The companies listed in Jegs & Summit should have one on the market by now. Give em a call. I always replace the fasteners on the crank, converter or clutch with ARP. Best hardware available...period. If you've ever seen what a flex plate or flywheel can do when they come apart at RPM it isnt pretty and can be deadly.
While you have the trans down now is the time to look at it for leaks and the exhaust specifically the manifolds for their reputation for sheering off the studs. Check your drive shaft slip joint and ujoints too while the shafts is out
