Powder Coating ?

I do my own powder coating and one coat is completely normal unless you're doing some silvers, candy or the "chrome" or some other special color that needs a clear to protect it. And the powder is much stronger than paint. My sand blaster won't even mess with it. I did my pullys, brackets and valve covers and it's still all good. If you do t mind me asking what are you trying to get done and what are they going to charge you?

Hey David, I have had a few items powder coated over the years and I think most items only require one coat, depending on what item you are having done. But, like the OP said, some items are "better" if they put another coat on them...it all depends on what you are having done and how you want it to look when finished. Here is a good site with lots of info about powder coating.

Yellow Zinc Plating
Specializing in auto parts restoration
<!-- End Masthead --><!-- Begin iMenu --><!-- End iMenu --><!-- Begin Left Column --><!-- #BeginEditable "content" -->Making old parts look new again
That beautiful golden finish, with hues of red, green and blue...
That's yellow zinc chromate, the attractive, protective plating/coating that covers new nuts, bolts, brackets, etc. and once graced the bits on your classic (or newer) car. The trouble faced by the restorer is that many of these pieces are either very expensive or no longer available.
Your old parts can be stripped down to bare steel and refinished to look like new, with the long-lasting protection zinc plating provides. The chromate adds a layer of additional protection. I like it because it just looks "right". Paint-on coatings don't quite do justice to a proper restoration or engine bay refresh.
Quick turnaround, fair prices, personalized service
I specialize in working with old, rusty parts from collectible and/or beloved cars. I'll answer your questions personally. I plate in small batches, one order at a time, so there's no chance your parts will get lost or misplaced. Unlike large-volume commercial platers, I'll do all of the prep work.

Yellow zinc-plated (also known as "zinc iridite" parts are used by Audi, BMW, Porsche, Jaguar, VW, Alfa Romeo, Saab, Opel, Ferrari, Mercedes and countless other car makers. Many older cars had yellow or "gold" cadmium plating, which looks more or less the same as zinc.
The above part is part of a batch of original pieces we restored for a 30 year Mini Cooper....like new again!

I see your in maryland, im in northeast md, are you talking about northeast powdercoating? if so I have had 2 frames done there, a couple sets of inner fenders and core supports. they do great work. I asked them about the number of coats, they said they usually do one, but on my frame where it was pitted pretty good they did 2 coats as the first did not fully cover. I think the one frame they did 3 coats. What are you thinking about getting done? works great with me, they are 5 minutes away.

I would think it's kinda like looking at a paint job under a microscope. On regular house paint I've seen pics and it's amazing how the second coat will fill 98%+ of the microscopic holes that are visible after one coat.
Benefits are massively reducing the ability of moisture to get underneath.Which is always a good thing.
