Just got back from a 400 mile trip to Wisconsin Dells for the weekend. Pulled a small enclosed trailer loaded to the max, plus about 800# in my truck. Much to my surprise:
My 13 F150 got it's EPA rating of 21 MPG going 68 MPH, while pulling a cargo trailer (Total about 3800 pounds more than the empty truck) and it got 19 MPG at 75 MPH. Way better than last time I towed over a year ago. I attribute this mostly to the new Cargo cap, which is nearly the same height as the trailer, and having more break in miles now 12K instead of 8K. Very pleased with the 5.0 & 3.55 gear combo!

I'm pretty happy with mine. I've gotten as low as 16 on a tank just driving around town, but I'm presently 1700 miles into a trip with an average of 20.7. I think that's pretty good for a v8 4x4 carrying enough stuff for a month long trip. Not to mention the comfort. I also have a Cadillac CTS, and I'll choose this truck on a trip any day.

Here is the epa testing:
The EPA testing maxes out at 60mph and averages 48 mph. It is not very realistic. I just wonder why they can't figure what "normal" driving is and do it. As to all the people posting there 400 mile trips and getting 20 +, how often does anyone do that?

Tim,
I am not saying no one does that. I do it twice a year too. I think you are the exception and still, if you drive 20k per year that is still less than 25% of your driving. The highway mileage is the one everyone loves to talk about and is probably 10% of their driving. Most of our driving is jamming around town and I get 16 with my stinking 3.7.

my truck has 6500 miles on it, and lifetime average is 19 mpg. I bought it to go on trips with the family and for work. Sometimes I have to drive it in the city to pick up job materials, but try to never drive it in the city unless its necessary. We own a truck and one decent mpg wagon.
If you don't need a truck, don't buy a truck... but don't buy a truck and complain about the gas mileage, there are plenty of fuel efficient vehicles out there..

Starting in 2008 the EPA added a high speed test to adjust the Highway Miles. The maximum speed is 80 MPH.

On my recent 2000 miles round trip for holiday. Got 19.3 using backroads going 65 mostly, then 18.8 on mixed backroad and interstate going between 65 and 75. I'm seeing improved result with 7500 miles on it now. But getting 20's, seems like a miracle. Did get 20.0 on a full tank once but was driving 45-55 most of the time. Around town and commuting to my home which is half highway and half city driving I get 16.5-17.
