I'm currently looking at a 1993 F-600 4x4 that I might purchase, remove the flatbed that's currently on it and put on a dump bed. It has one of the Ford straight six diesels (there's a bunch of snow on the fiberglass hood and have been unable to roll it forward to identify the engine) and an Allison 4-speed automatic with a column shifter. What I'm wanting to know is if with this transmission, if the F-600 could haul a backhoe on a tandem axle, dual wheel trailer?
If more info is needed, I can certainly do some more digging, or in this case, snow removal.

I use my 96 f800 with a 5 speed Allison, which should be that mine has a lower low gear.

 

A 93 could be the last of the 6.6/7.8 litre Fords, or a Cummins 5.9. Likely it is 210hp or less, being a 4X4. The allison could be an AT545, or MT643.
A VIN # would help, I'm sure.

 

Looks like I didn't finish a thought (wife says I do that a lot). I Tow with mine, 7500 lb trailer, and not uncommon to have equipment in the 20,000 lb range, so 27,500 lb and Im not sure what the truck weighs.

If your use to the pickup Allison, these are a lot different.

nevrenufhp, I finally got my 8.3 running good. Boost hose was worn through and the racor fuel filter was letting air in around the pump. Then I took the top off the p7100, its good now.

Its getting used to me . I'm liking it, but its a different kind of power.

 

Now for some Marine 480 injectors, a #0 fuel plate, gov springs, a little timing advance, head studs, and an HT3B turbo under the original.

 

SO! The snow has melted enough out west here and so I rolled back the hood on the truck and to my surprise (and ultimately, my dismay) it has the 160HP 359 CI Cummins (the 5.9L).

This now spurs another question... would it be worth the time and ultimately the money to dump in a 270HP Ford 474 CI Diesel (the 7.8L)?

No way on the swap to a 474, keep the 5.9. Hop it up, just a little(free mods). With 250hp, it'll do really well. I'd say, up to about 40k pounds. Now, the trans is probably going to be the turd of an AT545, and 250hp is the max you want to send thru it.

 

I realized after I posted my last comment that I wasn't thinking at all. First, the 474 and its little brother are good engines but very hard to find parts for it. When it comes to modifying & tweeking the engine's performance the Fords are a bit of a lemon. Where as the 359 Cummins has all sorts of performance parts available and it's still being produced.

Sorry! I didn't know what I was saying. I would keep the Cummins and build it up.

The door column tag said the truck was built in October of 1993 which I guess is technically Model Year 1994, hence VIN code "R" = 1994

 

Production Date: 10/93 = 1994.

Since new vehicles are introduced in September of the previous year, production begins in August.

 

Did the "heavier" F-Series (F-600 & up) have the option for the 8.3L Cummins?

 

Yes, they sure did. From mid 93 & up.
