New Bilstein's Feels Like A New Expedition

Well I just picked up my 98 Expedition XLT from my mechanic with a new set of Bilstein's on it and it is like I just got a new truck!! I guess 68,000 miles on the factory shocks really wore them out because as soon as I drove away I could feel the difference. If anyone is looking for shocks there should be no other choice than these, so thanks to everyone on here that told me that prior to me buying shocks becuase I can't be happier with the new ride. My next investment is the Helwig sway bar. Thanks again to everyone in this forum for all the advice!

For what it's worth I just had Monroe Reflex shocks put on my 98 Expy. The ride feels like I am in a Cadillac. The rolling feeling around curves is gone. Paid 35 bucks a piece, 60 for the install. According to the specs, roll is decreased by 12% and pitch is decreased by 18 % during emergency braking as compared to OEM shocks.

I also have Monroe Reflex on my 99 XLT. Installed it myself and also replaced my sway bar link with since one side was missing. But that was at 100K miles, I now have 128K miles and there is a very noticeable difference in ride as far as rolling and pitching is concerned. I paid $40 per shock at my local AutoZone. I feel I now have better control of the steering wheel. I guess ANY shock absorber would've been better than my original at 100k miles

Just ordered Helwig sway bars for the rear.

Drive safe,
Dan

1 set of Bilstein and 1 set Edelbrock!

98 Expy EB, changed out the stock shock with no air susp at 26K. 1st choice Bilstein, I had run on several german autos with outstanding results, they made Expy ride like a 1973 f100 PU.
Changed to Edelbrock after 12K and WOW what a difference!!!
Now at 85K with 45K on Edelbrok they are still going strong,
also running 265/70/17 Michelin Cross Terrain with 17X8 Teron rim by American Racing.
Hidden front Warn 9000lbs winch and Manik Brush bar.
PS. In 98 on the leading edge of custom rides!

How many of you owned your Expy from new and can compare to new factory ride? What brand gave you the best improvement over the new factory ride? Im a 50K now and just curious since I didnt own it new. I drive new cars everyday but you never pay attention till you actually own one. I notice a nicer overall ride on an 04 with its independent suspension but maybe they use a better shock too?

How much difference can you directly attribute to the shocks, when some also changed tires?

I have Reflex shocks too, I installed them due to the price and the fact that I could drive down the street and get them. Ride is good but I feel firm. I may be pickey though.

Thumbs up Monroe Gas Magnums

I had Monroe Gas Magnums installed on my 2001 2wd w/air rear suspension. They are great shocks and on the firm side. I also put the Helwig front and rear sway bars on at the same time and really love them. No more swinging and swaying on bumps and corners. I finally feel I could actually drive it in an emergency situation instead of just hoping I never encounter one.

njxlt,

I too have a 98 Expy and desperately need new shocks. Which Bilsteins did you get? Aren't there a couple of options?

Thanks,
Steve

I to have a 98 EB I bought used with 60K miles on it. It now has 92k miles with the OEM (non air system) shocks still on it. I've been reading alot about the Bilstein's shocks and was wondering which ones you bought?

Thanks

I got them at www.offroadwarehouse.com for like $60 each plus s&h! They list them on the site for different truck types (ex. 4wd or 2wd & with air leveling or without air leveling). I have had mine mounted for around 10,000 miles or so and they still feel like new. Plus Bilstein will warranty this shock for as long as you own that vehicle.
