Dual Exhaust And Mid-Ship Tank

Hello all i was poking around, reading various posts and came across a statement that said "if you run headers and dual exhaust, you have to do away with the mid-ship tank!!!!????? is this true???? If so why??

The normal set-up for true duals is one on either side of the drive shaft the mid-ship tank hangs down and is about flush with the bottom of the frame and is just inches from the driveshaft. I had that idea with a 77 my grampa had but I scrapped it because it was a Custom with only one tank and it was midship

Are you asking about a 73-79? ive got dual exhausts on two F250 highboys both with stock exhaust manifolds, and both with the tanks that are right behind the cab, just outboard of the drivers side frame rail........I dont know what works on a 2wd, an F100/F150, or a 77-1/2 to 79 F250 4x4........Please specify exactly what youve got, because otherwise we are just guessing

I have a 1978 F250 4X4 with dual tanks, one on the drivers side on the outside of the frame about half way back and the other one in the back between the frame rails....
do you happen to have pics of the exhaust routing by the middle tank ????

I dont have pics readily available, but remember ive got highboys, your 78 is different! assuming you run exhaust just inside of the frame rails, you should have at least 6" clearance between the tank and exhaust

you could probably cross your drivers side exaust over behind the engine cross member run both down the passenger side and cross the drivers side back over behind the rear Axel. it wouldent be ideal as your drivers side exaust would be longer than your passenger side but it would work. aether that or you could dump your exaust to the ground at the back of the cab depending on how close it came to the fuel tank you might consider a heat sheild

Huh thats a thought BroncoII.... the midship tank is mounted by a sudo skidplate/shield...i could probably run the exhaust pipe just inside the frame rail my concern then is muffler placement and the fuel lines and wireharness that run up the rail from the back of the truck.....

on 2wd and NON highboy 4wd's, the frame is wider so the tank is inside the frame. this means with long tube headers, the collector is pretty much pointed at the mid tank on the drivers side, mid length headers have a chance at curving to the passenger side when building the exhaust.

thanks to HIO Silver for the pics

I have had no issues running duals with long tube headers on any of my trucks. I run a tube down each side of the tranny then cross over by the tail shaft. Even on my son's 92 4x4 we were able to do this. Some pics of my current exhaust. Not perfect but 100% done in the driveway.

ALL factory installed mid-ship and aft axle tanks are mounted on the inside of the left frame rail.

Ford did not offer dual exhausts for these trucks. The only trucks that came with dual exhausts were the Lightning models introduced in the late 1990's. Both pipes exited out the right (passenger) side.

Well, then neither of My Highboys have factory installed midship tanks, cause both are outside........i kinda figured it about the 76, since it's filler was inside the wheelwell, but the 77 has 2 filler doors on the bed, 1 for the midship, 1 for the aft axle, but in the case of the 77, its presumably got a 78/79 bed....

I have read on here about aftermarket tanks on the outside of the framerail, that was a quiet assumption about what iggybob44 and Chevmn56 were talking about. there are threads on here that have pics of different exhaust routing, the one I am describing (badly) is silver or aluminized, goes under bellhousing from driver to pass side with two glasspacks(?) offset from the other to a handmade NASCAR type collector in front of rear wheel
