Need some help choosing a speedometer.

Hi everyone. Hope the holidays weren't to hard on everyone. Well I'm back into the 49 and need some help. The goal is Yellowstone park for the August long weekend. Considering that the whole truck is in about as many pieces as it can be taken apart into, this is definatly going to be a rough ride. And this is where all you folks come into play. I NEED ALL THE HELP I CAN GET.
I will be running a 91 AOD tranny from a Thunderbird in the truck. Instead of a proper speedometer cable this thing has an electrical connection bolted in. It has 2 wires coming out of the plug. Can these wires just be connected to an electronic speedometer? I will guess theres more to it than that but one can always hope. Can anyone tell me how to hook this tranny up? Thats option 1
Second option I considered is a GPS speedo but kind of worry about our flat windows and if the antenna would get proper reception.
Third option is can the electronic part be removed and a mechanical setup installed.
This site has proven to be a godsend in the past and I hope for the best from it in the future. Thanks for reading.
Remi

GPS works just fine in a 56 with the eyebrow sticking out over the windshield.

You can buy a speed sensor that will also accept the cable with the electrical. I will get the info for ya. I just bought mine and it is an easy thing to deal with.

In your position I would suggest taking a long hard look at this website Speedometer Gear, Speedometer Gears, Ford, GM, Dodge 700R4 the cable X which is about halfway down may be what tor looking for, depends on if it is a gear driven electronic or not. If it is gear driven they may have a better answer than using the cable X.

Remi, most electronic speedos have an adapter/harness available for the AOD. Just plug it in and go. No speedo cable required. Check with the gauge company.

So are you gonna stop by on the way to Jellystone?

I used an Auto Meter speedo with a 4R70W trans which would be similar to an AODE. The original speed sensor gave me a lot of headaches trying to get it to work. It slammed the needle so hard and so out of calibration that I sent it back and got it replace. Then I had to get the sensor for that speedo from Auto Meter. It was pricey but I had no choice. It works fine and I am satisfied with it.

That sensor you are referring to is the same one that would not work with the Auto Meter speedometer. Originally Auto Meter told me it would work with that sensor and transmission and all I had to do was go through the calibration sequence. It would jump violently on start up and slam the needle so hard until it eventually would only go back down to 10 mph instead of 0. They did replace the speedometer at no charge.

Mine is an electric speedometer without a cable. Is your speedometer working now?

Are the electronic speedos controlled by an inboard computer or are they independant of the vehicle computer?
As for coming your way, I think we're heading down through Coutts to Helena. But on the way back we/re coming up your way. I would love to stop and see what you got going on. And If I'm lucky enough to be driving the 49 I will definatley be over.

Use the multi-quote button for the first, second, etc... post you want to quote. It's right next to the quote button.

Then hit the quote button for the final post you want to quote.
