Yes, the bendix can be replaced and it's simple. You have to remove the starter to do it. The starter is attached with two long bolts that go through the housing. Do not remove the bolts from the housing. You should be able to back them up enough to unattach the starter from the hogs head.

If you can't find a replacement bendix, I have several used one that I can send you to try.

Note: A roll pin retains the drive to the armature. To gain access to the pin, the drive has to be unwound by hand.

 

So, I know obsolete parts can be costly. In this case (the carb link), I spoke with both companies in Texas. One would charge $8.00 but can't find it, and the other wants $40.00. I also found a TRAA-9772-C but it is 4" long vs. the 2.1" of the -A. The 4" one is $10.00. Seems the $40.00 price tag is high?
Panelman, you mentioned you may have a used one? Forgive my question, are you able to tell its condition in so far as staying on? If you have a reasonable confidence in its useability, would you be willing to sell and at what cost? I appreciate your consideration.

 

First, I think $40 is not unreasonable for a part that is specific and hard to find. Any 215/223 engine specific part is hard to come by. Second, I'm not 100% sure that I have the part and only guessing because I've had several engines that I've parted out. Third, if I do have the part, I wouldn't know the exact condition. I can only provide you with pictures if I am able to locate the part in the next few days. It's a very small part that could be hidden at the bottom of the many parts bins that I have.

I'm not trying to be harsh, but if it were me, I'd bite the bullet and buy the $40 NOS part. Your other option is to buy the 4" carb link, then shorten/weld to the correct length.

I restored two last year. One had the complete pedal to carb linkage. I think I got $30 for just the linkage and $50? for the complete unit with swivel. All pieces were redone and plated. NO paint used. You can see the part number in the longer linkage piece.

 

The pedal linkage pictured in the first picture is 53+. The carb linkage is similar 52+. The three "fingers" connector has flat "fingers" unlike the slightly bent "finger" as pictured.

 

Right you are. I got both carb linkage piece from two 54s in a junkyard. The pedal bracket came from a '53 V8 big truck.

 

Well, I'll take a turn at being harsh too. NOS Parts had something I needed that was at best a $10 part and wanted $40 for it, plus (IIRC) $12 to ship it, when it would easily fit in a $5 Flat-Rate box. I got the same part, also NOS, for $20 including shipping elsewhere. Antique Auto is my first choice, I'm sure it was them that couldn't find the part?

 

True, Ross. They are still looking for it. Their system says they have one, but still lost. Hopefully they will find it.

 

I was just stripping an old glass bowl 1904 Holley and noticed it still had the piece you need attached. Problem is, looks like some previous fellow grabbed it with a pliers. With some re-engineering (a few strokes with a small hammer), I got it to release the ball. If you could use it, it's yours. Not real pretty with the pinch marks.

I am a true Freshman User! My questions must seem old news to the experienced folks.
From what I can gather PN TRAA-9772-A is 2.1" long. There is a TRAA-9772-C which is 4" long. I measured mine (on the vehicle) and it is 2.5" long. Are they adjustable in length? I'm getting a headache of confusion!
