How to remove rear drums on 78 f250

Hello,

I need to get my drums off my f250 dana 61 axle with 3:07 gears.

What tool do I need to remove the hub?

Where do I purchase the tool?

What is the correct procedure to do this?

Does anyone know of the correct brake shoes to use on my axle?

Thanks

It's fairly easy first you remove the 8 bolts out of your axle shaft then there are to bigger bolts you can use channel locking pliers if you do t have the right socket and it should just come off

Is the Dana 61 a full floater? i know that 3.07 gears were kinda uncommon, maybe more of an E-series Van thing, and maybe semi floating?????

Dana 60's are available with or without Limited Slip........And they did make both semi and full floaters, and they disassemble differently

The dana 61 in my '78 F-250 is FF w/ 3.31 gears....

Slide the axles out (after unbolting them of course) & remove the spindle nut holding the drum/hub on. They sell specialized sockets for this, if needed.

Good luck!

The full floater will have a large hub that sticks out from the center bore of your wheel, maybe 5 inches past your lug nuts, while the Semi floater looks pretty much like a 1/2 ton rear axle, with the obvious exception that it has 8 lugs, not 5

You will see the hub sticking out from the rear wheels w/ bolts exposed (holding the axle shaft in)...

If its Full Floater( and i think Doc has confirmed it is) you remove the 8 bolts, than tap pretty hard on the center flange of the axle shaft, that usually causes it to come free, pull the axle shafts out, then you either buy the specialized socket to remove the drum retaining nuts, or use a big set of channellocks to loosen them.....Id recommend buying the socket, it should be pretty universal for any Dana 60/61

As far as brake size goes, you should be able to either pull the old brakes, match them up at a parts store.....OR, if you look at the warranty plate on the door, look for GVWR,and with that info, and whether its a Camper Special or not, and other info, a parts counter guy oughtta be able to get you the right parts

I may just let the dealership deal with the axle. I already need to take the truck in to have them do the upper and lower ball joints.

I have a 61 with 410's. The shoes were larger for the 61 than a 60. I had a few arguments with the guy at Napa over this. I am nowhere near my toolbox or I would tell you what size that socket is you need.
