axle noise and clunking

Started to work this morning and there is a loud clunking noise coming from the drivers side front axle, you can even feel it. Could that possible be the CV joint ? it has the switch on the fly 4x4 to so I also thought maybe that hub wasn't pulling all the way in since I have been having trouble with the 4x4 anyway. Any suggestions where to start ?

Thanks,

1st I'd make sure you don't have ice built up from the road and is rubbing and making a bunch issues that would go away with a good bath.

you might have snapped the sway bar end link. or any other host of front end components

ther 4 x 4 engages the front axle at the center pumpkin. The half shafts are tied to the outer hub constantly and rotate at road speed. There is no "disengage" at the outer end. Enrich has the right idea--- a close inspection is in order.
