When I swapped out the 300 for a 390 in my 77 high boy I just had to unbolt the towers and move them to the next set of holes.

The frame has (on my 77) had different holes to relocate the towers. I can go out and look at my 78's in the morning and look but I assume they do as well.

Vice versa

I got a 78 as well and I am looking at doing the opposite swap (300 out 351 in) when I come back up with mine (currently tearing the truck down to the frame). I got the six out day before yesterday. I will try to get some pics tomorrow to try to help identify.

Here is a pic of my passenger side tower location. I tried to clean up some of the other potential locations. There appears to be corresponding holes underneath the tower that will allow for movement. This is where it is set for the 300. I can post another pic of the drivers side after I clean it up... I had a bad PS leak over several years and there is way too much gunk buildup to discern anything useful at the moment.

I did a little more research in the Master Parts Catalog and found this. It appears to support ChopTop's statement about moving the towers.

Move your towers back one set of holes to go from i6 to v8. I assume 2wd is the same, don't see why it wouldn't be. I know that I was glad to find that they were so easy to do when I swapped mine about 15 years ago.
