Huge oil leak

Got out to the truck thismorning to go to work and found a pretty big pool of oil under it. I was in a rush to go to work so I didn't have much time to look it over and now I'm home and it's dark. What I was able to see thismorning was the leak seems to be on the top of the engine. The valley has a good amount of oil in it and it's leaking down the back of the block. I could not see anything on the top font section of the engine leaking oil so I'm assuming it's coming from the back side. What could be leaking back there the oil line for the turbo? I'm glad I cought it this morning, I pulled the dip stick and it was 4 qts low.

I would start at the HPOP and work my way back. The gusher oil leaks I have had were from the HPOP and HPOP hoses. If the valley of the V is full of oil it is making its way from a leak in front and running down the back of the engine. I have had waste gate actuator leaks and turbo pedastle sp o-ring leaks but they were not gushers.

Wastegate or turbo pedestal o-rings would be a good place to start if it's from the back. If it's closer to the middle of the engine, check where the HPOP lines go into the head.

Sounds like you've got a relatively slow leak for now, you're just dumping a bunch at once when the valley fills up. If it's an o-ring and it decides to get worse, be sure you have some extra oil or the phone number to a tow truck.

Get in there and clean the valley well. Several orings that can leak, plus diesel fuel can leak and wash down the back looking a lot like oil.

We'll got out there today to take a look at it and found what I didn't want to find. It's the hpop a little more expensive then what I was hoping for but I guess it's the nature of the beast. My truck only has 45,000 miles on it right now, what causes this to happen and is there anything I can do to prevent it from happening again?

What on the HPOP is leaking? Unless the rear snap ring came out and puked HPOP guts into the engine V everything else is fixable. O-rings etc are not that expensive If you have the tools and the time. Can you post a picture of the leaking area?

I had an o-ring go out on me a few years ago, and within a couple miles it spewed several quarts of oil. It was just a small plug in the back of the HPOP. I found exactly where it was coming from with a flashlight and inspection mirror. Went to the Ford parts counter and they had the correct o-rings packed with Loctite 680. (You need the Loctite in order for the o-ring to seal properly) Clay at Riffraff has a kit too for cheaper than what I paid at the Ford counter: HPOP o-ring kit w/ 7 o-rings - Riffraff Diesel Performance

This might not be where your leak is coming from, but it's a possibility. The only way to know for sure is to get in there with a light and a mirror. Too many other possibilities for leaks.

45k??? dam, motor isn't even broken in.

I would guess o-rings and such too. check your hoses too while your at it.

as for doing it your self, its not bad at all. if I can do mine during the winter in Montana outside on my van no less.

imagine doing your HPOP with your hood down to about a foot. that is how much fun the van guys have when they have to work on anything in the front.

good luck with the fix

Guess that's the trade off. I need to pull turbo again to do EBP pedestal leaks, and up pipes. Trade?
