Need help diagnosing Ford 9" axle noise.

I've been making steady progress on my 1950 F3 over the past couple of months, to whit:
- Converted from 6 to 12 volts with GM alternator.
- Refreshed all engine components and got engine running for first time in 20 years.
- Converted front hubs to disc brakes from Speedway.
- Installed power brake system from CPP.
- Installed 1999 Dodge RAM wheels with new Cooper 225/75x16 tires.
- New shock absorbers.
- General cleanup and paint of chassis back as far as the start of the bed.
- Removal of original F3 rear axle.

I'm now in the midst of rebuilding a 1959 Ford F100 9" rear (3.50 ratio, 28 spline) to put under the truck. Have replaced axle bearings and seals and am working on pinion bearings. While reviewing what needed to be done on the axle, I discovered that there is a ticking/clunking sound that happens when the left axle is rotated (but not the right) leading me to think that it is coming from the differential spider gear(s). I've removed the third member and am now pretty sure that's it - I know it's not the differential bearings.

Is this likely to be the result of the thrust washer(s) deteriorating? Should I just go ahead and install a spider repair kit like this one from Yukon?
Auto Parts: YPKF9-S-28-2 - Yukon standard open spider gear kit for 8 and 9 Ford with 28 spline axles and 2-pinion design. Yukon uses higher quality materials and better techniques than OEM to ensure a longer lasting spider gear set. All components co

Any help appreciated
