My buddy just picked up a '99 ZF6 4x4 RCLB 177k, as a project truck (Rust, lots of it and no bed).

The PO only had it for a short while, and doesn't know what was done to it. It seems mostly stock, except for a 4" turbo back exhaust and the waste gate actuator on the turbo says "BANKS BIG HEAD". I'm not sure if that's part of a replacement turbo system, or just an aftermarket waste gate actuator. It did come with an Edge tuner, but the truck seems to be on the stock tune.

The problem he's having is that it has a long crank time. 5-10 seconds of cranking before it starts. The weird part is though, it starts smooth and cleanly. So 5-10 seconds of cranking, and then it suddenly lights off and settles into a smooth idle with no smoke. It was a 20*F day, but even after letting the truck run for 10 minutes, it did the same thing trying to restart it.

The only other thing of note, is that it does hunt for quite a bit when returning to idle after starting or revving it. Maybe an IPR problem? Cold, old oil?

 

i had weak fpr on my 99 and fuel pressure at idle was 21 but after repairing with diesel o rings kit fuel psi now 65 at idle and good starting

 

I think I would clean the ipr and give it an oil change.
