Air noise from front of Engine?

Hello
I have an 2006 F350 6.0 liter diesel with about 115000 miles on it. Recently I have noticed a rushing air noise when revving up the engine. It seems like it is on the passenger side in the front of the engine. I have new rubber boots from riff raff diesel (very tight) and the turbo builds pressure up to about 30 psi. Would the turbo build pressure with an intercooler leak loud enough to hear like mine? The noise does not appear to be coming from the turbo itself. Any advice would be appreciated. The truck seems to have power. Where could the noise be from???

Thanks

Maybe your fan is turning on. What temps when you hear the noise?

Welcome to FTE Doc

When the fan turns on it sounds like a 727 sitting under the hood.... from what he described it is more subdue. Do you have a stock intake air filter or aftermarket?

Air filter is on driver side. I didnt know if he just got the truck and never heard the fan before. When it does turn on there is more air moving on the passenger side.

had the truck since new. Stock intake. Air noise is not the fan that cuts on when hot (that does sound like jet engine). Sounds like a louder than normal fan air noise noise. I think the intercooler could be leaking but would the turbo build to 30 psi?

More boost more noise? Has your fuel Mileage dropped? It could build to that much boost if it wasnt a big leak. You could pressurize the air system and find out real quick

Unless it has Been hit by a rock and has a hole in the surface, the most common failure of the intercooler it's self is where the plastic tanks seal on each side. It's possible to pull the rubbery plastic dust shield back a little and peek in with a flashlight. Look for blue or orange color o-ring bulging out where the tanks are crimped on. If you see any color it's probably leaking a little. If it's just starting to leak, it will fail soon and a longer piece the seal will be hanging out, hard to miss.

If you smell exhaust, it could be exhaust side. Mine leaked at exhaust manifold eventually was able to find soot marks around flange.

Good point on the smell, he may have a cracked bellow in the up-pipe.

These are the up-pipes, flexible joint is where they crack. This picture shows my modified up-pipe eliminating the feed to the EGR cooler on the passenger side. If one of the bellows crack, you get a hissing sound and will smell exhaust.

Crawl under the truck and you'll see the pipe connection to the exhaust manifold going up to the turbo. A Few pics of the uppipe are on fte, can't give you a link at the moment, but try a search..

Thanks for all replies. I will look at turbo pipes as well as intercooler. I think it is the intercooler since I smell no exhaust fumes. If the seal is blown on the intercooler , Can it be repaired? (or will a new one be required)

Thanks

You might check BulletProofDiesel - Darn-Near Bullet Proof Diesel Products for your 6.0 and 6.4 to see if they have a repair kit for the intercooler. I know that they had some options for aluminum end tanks. Other than that you'll have to get a new one.

Here are the end tanks: http://www.bulletproofdiesel.com/Do_...pgrade-kit.htm
