need 4 speed options

hello guys im new to these f100's . i just picked up a 79 f100 shortbed 302 4 speed 2 wd.
I took her out today since we had some nice weather. the truck is a factory 3 speed on the tree. Its been converted to a 4 speed. im not sure what trans is in there . the trans didn't want to shift nice at all and down shifting was impossible. not sure if its the np435 or not but first is super low and second is perfect . i tried looking at the case of a np435 and comparing it mentally to what i remember seeing under there and it doesnt look the same.
that being said ... i have a t-5 thats built with a short throw shifter that i was going to use when i put my 306 motor in but im not sure how it will handle with the 3.00:1 gears in there and the heavy truck. any thought on that or what trans is under there and rebuild or a better trans?

simple the 435np has an aluminum top..... and the 435 has a 6.68 to 1 gear ratio 1st ...3.34 2nd.... 1.66 3rd....1 to 1 4th..... it probably just needs clutch adjusted is the reason for the crappy shifting.... when adjusting clutch remember to block the tires before you get under it and a little adjustment goes a long way the best way is to do it in small increments till you get the desired feel and usability out of it.....a 3.00 gear and a 4spd behind a 302 is a pretty decent combination for drivablilty and fuel mileage just don't expect to win races really but thats not what trucks are really for anyway.... good luck and welcome to FTE

I'm thinking its the np or the t 18 after some more reading. The clutch catches towards the top of the pedal .... oh wait that makes sense. Its not disengaging enough. doh !!! I will try that but a rebuild isnt that hard and its cheep. Thanks for the info

these trans normally don't need replaced till either the internal shifter forks break or gears get destroyed save you money and put is elsewhere if you can JMHO
