ScanGauge II

I'm thinking about getting a ScanGauge 2 for my 2006 Super Duty F250 (6.0). Is there anything I have to buy in addition to the ScanGauge, or is the truck prewired with all sensors needed to monitor the 6.0 common issues? And is it somewhat self-explanatory, or does one need an engineering degree to use it?

I would definitely recommend getting the Scan Gauge. When you buy the Scan Gauge it comes with everything you need but you will need to put some codes in it to be able to view all of the sensors values. It is not hard to do but does take a little time. The only two reading the Scan Gauge can not read to my knowledge is the Fuel Pressure and Exhaust Gas Temperature. You can get on the Scan Gauge website to get a few of the codes to unlock some of the X-Gauges on your device, but the guys in the 6.0 forum will be able to give you a much more elaborate list.

the only thing you'll need to consider is programming the X-gauges as mentioned, as well as where/how you're going to mount the unit. there is a thread somewhere on this site of the different places/ways people have done it.

it (or some other equivilant) is an absolute must for any 6.0l owner.

Yes, setup takes a bit to type in the codes for the first x-gauge, but after that they go in easily...

I have two scangauges that I got early on and never really used....

My logic (or lack of it ) paralled the tuner questions...

Since others had gone down that road and knew what their truck did with this tuner,
I piggy-backed on their knowledge and "ASSumed" that tuner would work on my truck (as long as I didn't go out of my mind with tuning and racing)
and it did work fine for 130k miles before I traded trucks...

Once I had the scangauge in the truck I found I never really watched it so I didn't realize any benefit from it...

good luck !

So there's a reading for oil temp....what good is that without an actual coolant temp? Or is there a coolant temp code also?

Coolant Temp is already programmed on the SG II when you get it out of the box. You can also program in another one but they are the same thing. The Engine Coolant Temp and Engine Oil Temp is what I monitor just about all the time on my truck, as that seems to be the root cause of any major problem encountered with the 6.0. From what I seen, the SG II is a really good, useful tool to monitor the truck, it just doesn't look as cool as some of the other options. For me, I didn't want the hassle of connecting my phone via bluetooth every time I went for a drive, and the Edge Insight units are just a little out of my price range right now.

same here. i always ran FICM main voltage too before i had my FICM updated. now its usually ICP (monitoring what i think is a HPOP on the fritz) and voltage during the winter months.

I usually watch my FICM Main Voltage while cranking and for the first little bit after start up and then switch to ICP and IPR. I also like to check out the Voltage especially since my truck sits alot during the winter when race season has come to an end.
