What HVLP gun do you have?

I just bought a DeVilbiss Finish Line 670. It's for spraying waterborne paints, stains & primers. It has great ratings. I will give a usage rating when I get the cast off my leg. I found it for under $200 at Eastwood. I have a cheap Ridgid HVLP gun. It's okay but I want a good gun to spray cabinets with waterborne lacquers. This gun has all stainless parts & comes with 3 tips. I hope it works good.

I'm due for a waterborne specific gun too Howard. Lots of shop/cabinet work the last few months. Let us know how you like it please.

The new waterborne finishes are great. You can't get the quality of finish they have with solvent based paint. Plus you don't have to inhale the deadly fumes the solvent base paints produce. I will post how I like it as soon as I can. I can't wait to try it.

I've been using General finishes waterborne polys and lacquers for a while and, yes, they sure have come far. The self leveling qualities and succesive quick recoating are a plus since you still need a greater build with this stuff...but it still aint the same as good solvent based (call me resistant to change).

Check out the ones at Thefinishingstore.com. They search for the best waterborne finishes to sell in the store. I like their lacquer. Waterborne finishes have their own little issues. They raise the grain more than solvent base does. I stop this by spraying my project with water in a handheld spray bottle. After the grain raises I sand & spray my first coat of finish.

Thats exactly what I do Howard. Sometimes I think we went to the same school half a country apart. <!-- / message -->

It sure looks that way. I search the web for info on whatever new thing I try & I ask the pros I know also. I bet you do the same thing. I have always tried to be as educated in the trades I use as possible. It's changing so much I can barely keep up.

Yeah, I bought an inexpensive Harbor Freight model (not the purple one), to use spraying primer on my truck. So far it has worked well. But, I have been told not to use it when it comes to actually painting the truck. I still have plenty of body work and more primering to do before I get to the paint stage though.

You will need a good gun to apply the paint. Get the best one you can afford.

I have a Sata Jet Rp 3000 and I love it. But at $600 a pop I better love. And it can spray both waterborne and solvent base paints. Lays the clear down like glass.

I hear you. I want a Apollo turbine gun. The one I want is $1300 with the turbine. It will handle any paint with the right tips. My new gun will spray both types. It has a plastic cup with stainless works. I hope to try it this weekend if I get this damn cast off my leg.

My HVLP gun works great. I sprayed a door with water based lacquer. It came out slick as glass.
