I'm trying to track down an exhaust leak under the hood (I think). Should there be any movement in the air injection tube that distributes the air to the exhaust? It can move about 1/8 inch up and down with a gentle tug - it does not appear to be snug in the fittings that are screwed into the manifold. I can smell the exhaust under the hood and in the cabin.

The exhaust system is new(er) and I could not find any obvious leaks. It is louder than I would expect.

Yep sounds like that's the problem, very common on these.

I would suggest just ripping it all out, but since you have a '96 you have OBD2 and might be more likely to trigger a code if you do that. It's very difficult to remove one without trashing it in some way, so you'll probably need to buy new if you're going to replace it.
