Engine replacement cost, in case you were wondering

I recently talked to my service manager at Ford who had a new 6.7 PSD put in my truck last month and found out that the total cost for the engine with labor was $26,000!. Thankfully it was covered under warranty. Just thought that was a bit of interesting information. The entire HPFP system has also been replaced for about $18,000 (under warranty). More than half the value of the truck right there. I've heard bad things about Ford standing by their trucks, but they definitely have stood by this one, for better or for worse.

Ouch, glad you weren't footing the bill. Perhaps I missed it, but what went wrong with your original engine?

It had a problem with one of the cylinders (poor contribution), the cause of which still hasn't totally been figured out. Could've been a cracked cylinder wall, though now it's possible it could have been an electrical issue all along. Either way they dropped a new engine in. I'm really glad I didn't have to foot the bill either but I'm still surprised at the effort and money Ford continues to put into this truck. While I'd love to just get a new one, I give them credit for continuing to try with this one.

I explain it a little more in this post....

It makes me question what deletes, tunes and other mods do to the trade-in value of a truck? I don't think I would buy a truck that someone else had tuned or modified (turbo, etc.) with the possibility of an engine failure. Am I overly cautious or paranoid not taking the risk to get a little more power?

I mean all of my troubles occurred without any modifications to any part of the truck, but it is also ingrained in me not to do anything that would void the warranties, as lame as that may be.

I think it depends on what one is looking for DW, somebody might go "Tuned, sweet, I don't have to do it myself". While you & I might assume it's been drove hard & put away wet. I was told by dealer that if a truck rolls in on trade-in deleted, they can't take it or sell it - just what I was told. Wise to keep the factory stuff on the side lines for re-install if needed, and I think most folks keep there old stuff "just in case".

Almost all modifications either add no value, or potentially lower the value (if they are modifications that don't have much value to the everyday buyer).

You may get some money back if you sink 10k or so in well regarded mods, and you can find the right buyer that values it (tuner, deletes, high end lift kit, good wheels/tires, 5th wheel hitch etc.), but you will probably only see 2-3k back.

Glad to hear your Dealer took good care of you! Yeah...I'm with you and mods to a new truck...or a truck under warranty.

I'm lame like that too. My warranty and extended warranty are a very important part of my owning this truck or any expensive vehicle. Too many stories here about trucks with 40-50k on them breaking (expensive truck was never supposed to break) and the cost to fix is high. Then the owner without warranty coverage is mad, hates Ford, hates the dealer, will never purchase another Ford product. Dealer took more than a day to fix the truck.

I carry an extended warranty on our 2014 Ford Escape too.
