I am planning on taking a 2,000 road trip soon and it being winter I will have to idle at night to keep warm while I sleep. How bad is this for the motor? Are there high idle modules or something to raise the idle speed slightly?
There should no problems with idling for a long time, as long as you make sure you don't let exhaust into where you'll be sleeping.
What he said. It would really ruin your day if you woke up dead.
At a bare minimum please put a CO detector in your van near where you will be sleeping.
Or better yet, get a good winter sleeping bag, or even two. The cost of the sleeping bags should be cheaper than the cost of the fuel to idle your van all night, night after night. I've been backpacking in the winter and with the right gear you can be toasty warm even with zero degree temperatures.
I just made road trip like that. We idled at night sleeping in the van and idled for 8 hrs sitting in a traffic jam. Zero problems from it. If you sleep in it, make sure there are no exhaust leaks and park so that the wind will carry off the output from the tailpipe away from the vehicle.
