transmission has its own mind

this morning i start the truck up no problem, go to put it in gear, and nope.
t18 in a 1985 f250 straight six.
wouldnt go into second or third so im like ughh reverse always work ill just back out to warm up the transmission probably. well i put it in gear, clutch still all the way down, and she starts going backwards!
hit brakes, stop. let off, go!
still had trouble shifting all ten minutes to work, going to lunch too! after lunch however, smooth as butter!
im in beaufort sc so its not that cold out.
what is the cause of this??

You have a hydraulic clutch. Is there any fluid in it? Make sure to pull the rubber boot off the reservoir if it sticks to the top of it(it's supposed to stay in the cap).

it does not stay in the cap, and i topped it off the other week after i had issues and you said to check my fluid level i thought my clutch was going out, until it warmed up and had no problems at all, it does this occasionally it just gets bad for like 12 hours and then is perfect the next week or two

Sounds like time to start renewing the hydraulic system. It's giving you a warning, heed it. Many times, there are no warnings........

It gets chilly, but even when it was cold the other week it didn't do it.

It's random. It'll get bad throughout the day then the longer it goes the harder it eats then it'll go back to easy.

As far as renewing the hydraulics, do you mean new clutch master cylinder? If I'm doing all that I'm going to try and find a 5speed and swap the whole transmission or atleast a t19.

I asked because in your first post you said "This morning"
In your second post you said "until it warmed up and had no problems at all"

Now you say "It's random" and... "It'll get bad throughout the day then the longer it goes the harder it gets"

So, are you saying it will just pop up and and gets progressively worse, then just vanishes?

Your reservoir was low.
Is the slave leaking into the bellhousing?

Yes it just pops up and vanishes.

My fluid has been fine for months. I had it get hard to shift shortly after I started daily driving it and we checked and the fluid was full. Then the other day after I did all my brake work and distributor and everything I figured I'd check it and filled it up and actually over filled it a little and it spilled out the cap while tightening. It leaks around the bellhousein I think it's a rear main leak since the fluid has never been low.
