The smelling of gas seems to be the indicator of a problem.

Lots of V10 users see single digit mileage.

Have a good look around the injectors to see if you have a leak
on the top side O-rings. It would not take much to tank your MPGs.
Look for places where it looks like any dirt has been washed away.

Bullit like I said 17 for almost 2 mo. after the injectors were serviced.
The Ford dealer in Vero Beach Fl.did the service and I was surprised with the results.
Then it settled down to the 12-14
Went to Alaska and got about 8-9 pulling a good size trailer.
Yea smelling of gas is a darn good indicator of trouble, so's getting 8 mpg.
Guess I'll take to the dealer and put it on the computer??

Come to this site for help and get some smart alec showing how smart he is.

I think Bullit went outta his way trying to help you out here, not be a smart ***. You got 17mpg outta a V10? C'mon.. I owned 2 of them, neither saw anything close to what you're reporting. Not even a 2wd, regular cab, idling..lol. Love the V10, but they don't get those MPG's, that's a fact.

I have never seen 17 mpg out of my 5.4 V8.

8-9 pulling a good size trailer is very much in line with what others report. Some folks see 8-9 out of their V-10 without pulling a trailer, although it seems like your experience is that your truck and driving style should be better. If you get around 12, I would think that would be pretty good.

A lot of folks will find that 17 a hard number to believe.

It does remind me of a story. The guy in the cube next to me used to work for Ford. One of his coworkers bought a new vehicle in the 70's (first "gas crisis") and used to brag about the good mileage he was getting. So a bunch of guys in the office started adding a gallon of gas to his tank every couple of days. His mileage soared, and he bragged on and on. Then they quit doing that, and some even siphoned a bit off. He was at wits end trying to figure what was "wrong" with his vehicle. They tired of the game after a few months. Not sure if he ever found out they were messing with him.

I really like you story.

How much do you want to bet that the OP was using the onboard computer for the MPG. That
would explain the higher MPG. They like to be optimistic and try to make you feel good.
The odd thing is my MPG the computer reads high and the miles to E tend to be low. SO
can I have some of what the programmers were smoking?

Here is one just for SC_Hoaty

I ask for help not BS.
I get on here and tell you what's wrong with my truck.
I explain what it's doing.
I explain what's happening.
I tell you all the particulars and ask for help.
I work on outboards and know diagnosing a problem with all the info helps.
Why would I BS anyone when I'm asking for help.
I don't care if YOU don't get 17 out of your 5.4 V-8 I'm telling you what I know and what I experienced.
If you can help please post and if you can't don't post. Simple.
Yahiko did you read the whole thing?
I know how to check mileage. No onboard computer.
You know I really don't care if YOU or anyone believes me.
I asked for help not your opinion.
When I said my truck was getting 17 I was getting 17.
You don't have to believe anything.

IF YOU CAN HELP?? I really appreciate it.
If you ever need your boat fixed contact me.
IF YOU CAN"T!! Then don't post!

Quit being a cry baby.
If you can't take some ribbing the mod is not going to help.

Do you have access to nay diagnostic tools for this truck?

I did read the original post. You made no reference to how you cam to the 17MPGs. The computer is called a Lie-O-meter for a reason.
The fact that you have gotten 17 is unbelievable for people.

Lest let that go.

What work have you done to the truck?

Have you looked to see if the O-rings on the top of the injectors are leaking any because you did not answer that?

If you still getting a raw gas smell then there is a leak somewhere. Time
to trace each line to remove then from the list as the leak point.

Sean
The charcoal canister is overfilled and likely the purge valve isn't opening or could be stuck open to allow the fumes to move either back into the tank or into the intake.

Either way...

Here is a little youtube video.
You could have 2 or 3 sensors. One for each bank
and one at the outlet of the cat or one pre cat and one post cat

Do your self a favor and don't start throwing parts at the problem. Your not likely to hit it
the first time and will end up costing you more money. You need to first find and fix the
raw gas smell. Like Josh said charcoal canister would be a good place to start. Then check
the lines. That item that is up by the evaporator is the control device. Don't assume that if you
have the truck scanned that if it says that it's X that X is really the problem (part throwing).

You need to get some tools to read what is going on. The first thing would be get it scanned for
any stored codes. You may or may not have any. You then have to go into troubleshooting mode.
It helps if you have some more info next time you post

Have you been topping the tank off ? Because if you have you may have a wet canister.

Sean - I think he posted a while back that he puts like 10 gallons at a time in. I took that to be partial fills normally.

But since you can't calculate gas millage that way (different fill level each time) it does raise a good question.

The short version of the O2 sensor is it checks in the exhaust stream for incomplete combustion, and changes the air/fuel ratio accordingly. Since it messes with the amount of fuel provided, it can impact both millage and driveability.
