Thermostat orientation - backasswards?

Is it possible to put a thermostat in 'backwards' so that it doesn't function properly? Specifically, on the straight 6 215 ci engine on the 52' F-1. Kinda' embarrassed to ask, since I should know this.

Having problems with a leak and thinking that this could have some bearing on my issues.

I recently installed mine with the small 'tit' out and the big round part toward the engine.

Thanks for any clarification.

That is correct but either way it shouldn't leak, except if it was backwards something would eventually have to give. Think of it this way, heat is required to activate the operation of the thermostat so the busy parts, whatever the design, usually involves a spring, need to be exposed to the hot water side/engine block.
The original thermostat in my 56 was fairly unique, at least I had never seen one like it; had a piston and a shaft with an outer spring and opened and closed like the butterfly on a carb. The shaft had broken so it was permanently open

Thanks Nojive, that's a simple way to remember it with the 'busy parts'. Looks like mine is in properly then. Just replaced a head so I wanted to be sure and get it right !

My thermostat housing is badly worn on the bottom side and I suspect that the water is getting by the very thin lip on the bottom. Guess that is what 60 plus years of wear and tear will do.
Planning on getting a photo of the 52' in my avatar soon.
BTW looking for a replacement 215 for the ole girl as she has had a problem with the head stud threads and currently running four (4) helicoils and only 60 # pressure on #5 cylinder.
Ya'll help me find one if you can!
Happy Thanksgiving to all
