460 Valvetrain Questions

I have a 77 F250 thats my pulling truck. I just bought it early august and it has a ford factory remanufactured 460 in it with only 30,000 miles on it. Its a C9VE block and had D3VE heads on it. I picked up a set of D0VE-A heads i plan on putting on it that the intake ports have been opened up to match a SCJ intake. I ordered a Comp Cams Cam Kit with a cam timing set valve springs lifters keepers and locks. Its a 262 275 duration cam. My question is does anyone know what length pushrods i will need with these D0VE-A heads? They have the stock studs still in them but i also do not have the rockers for them.. Can anyone give me an idea what rockers and pushrods i need?

if it was me i would go with an after market setup. i would get a set of roller rockers, new studs (the non-positive stop style), guide plates and hardened pushrods. it will be a bit more expensive then the factory setup but in the long run is a much better system.

if you want to stay stock, then you need the early sled type rocker arms and you should be able to use the pre-71 pushrods on that combo. but you still should get an adjustable pushrod checker and check for proper geometry once you mock it up especially since you are using an aftermarket cam and the heads have been rebuilt. the cam could be ground on a bigger base circle and the valves could be longer then stock making the stock pushrods ineffective. the stock setup is not adjustable as the rocker arms and studs are positive stop so you just torque them down.

the other problem with the stock rocker arms are they don't allow for much more aggressive cams or lift then stock and the tips wear quite quickly with aggressive cams along with the valve tips especially if the geometry is off with a wrong length pushrod.

i would spend the extra money to go with a better top end if it was mine.

Your best bet is to get the cam in and measure since the block and/or the heads probably have been milled some which will change the valve train geometry.

Do you want to stay with factory rockers or go with full roller rockers? If you go with most roller rockers you will need to have it setup for use with guideplates and run hardened pushrods.

If you don't want to machine for guideplates you need to look for pushrods that are self aligning.

Heads are at the machine shop now. He is machining for guideplates and also installing screw in studs for adjustable rockers. I ordered roller rockers from Comp cams that they recommended for use with the particular cam i bought. I guess now all i really need to do is figure out the length of the pushrods but im guessing its best to wait untill i get the heads on the engine and measure them? and yes i will be buying the hardened pushrods that are also recommended for my cam but there is two different lengths that they sell for the 429-460

I use TFS pushrods and you measure then order the length you need for each side (exh/int).
