You want to look at the number/letter in the 8th position of your VIN #:

U = 3.0L Regular Gasoline OHV (12v) - Ranger/Taurus/Sable

1 = 3.0L Flexible Fuel Gas/Methanol OHV (12v) - Taurus/Sable

2 = 3.0L Flexible Fuel Gas/Ethanol OHV (12v) - Taurus/Sable

V = 3.0L Flexible Fuel Gas/Ethanol OHV (12v) - Ranger

S = 3.0L Regular Gasoline OHC (24v) - Taurus/Sable

I have a 1999 XLT FFV Ethanol and the VIN number has a "V" at the 8th position. When I go to Autozone I have to tell them its a "V" or they always give me the wrong parts. Hope this helps.

Thank you JB. The info I provided comes from my '98 factory manual so they might have used a "V" after that. I have also seen the "V" when searching for parts for my own 3.0L, so it is probably quite common. I will edit my post so there is no confusion.
