AWD not working. Direction needed.

Okay the problem is my AWD in my 98 Ford Expedition doesn't work. When shifted into AWD in starts flashing. The 4HI does work but it will not shift on the fly. You have to come to a complete stop to get 4H to work. 4L works like it's supposed to. I have read the post on this problem. Shift motor is working, took it off to confirm. From actuator is also working. I have read that the sensors in the transfercase could be the problem. My transfercase has 2 of them. Are they both the same sensor just checking different things? Do I have to replace 1 or both to fix my problem? Have also heard that the speed sensor on the rear axle could be the culprit.

The part number for the sensor on the transfercase is 1L2Z-7F293-BA. About $50.

Does anybody have any further info on what these sensors do and how to fix?

It's my wife's truck, and would really like the AWD and the 4wd to work the way it's supposed to.

I agree that it's probably one of the transfer case sensors. Judging from the fact that you cannot shift on the fly but can when stopped, I suspect the front sensor, or it's circuitry is the problem. If the rear sensor was the problem, then the speedometer wouldn't be working.

Okay. Where is the rear sensor mounted. To the left of the transfer case motor or to the right? I can't quite remember how they are mounted. Are both sensors the same part number?

Don't sweat it, sometimes it can take days for people to respond. I've attached PDFs of the repair manual pages for the front and rear speed sensors. They should help you to locate them.

Thanks. That's awesome. I appreciate your help. Do you know if they are the same part numbers?

I believe they are, but I am not 100% certain. I'm more like 90% certain.

Old thread but I found it. Alright got the sensors fixed. AWD stays shifted in now and doesn't flash anymore. Still will not shift on the fly into AWD or 4H. I know my actuator motor is working. And last time I checked my front axle actuator was shifting also. I am at a loss.

You have to be stopped and in neutral to shift in or out of low. But 2H to 4H or A4WD should happen at any speed under 65 MPH. Can you shift between 2H, 4H, and A4WD when stopped?

As long as I am stopped everything works great. Just no shift on the fly.
