1959 Ford F100 Driver side brake light not working?!?

Okay I know what everyone is thinking. Check the bulb. It is not the bulb. So let me tell you what I know so far.

Taillights work, both driver and passenger. Only the passenger brake light works. I have traced this back to the steering column really. I have been able to test the yellow wire that controls the driver side blinker and brake light. This yellow wire is the wire that comes from the turn signal lever on the steering wheel.

From this yellow wire I have used a multimeter to identify if there is power to the wire. When I push the brake and test the wire there is no power however if I disconnect the wire from the brake light and then push the brake it shows voltage when the brake is pressed. Something is happening when I actually connect the wire to the source.

I have tried to bypass all current wiring and run from the steering wheel column yellow wire directly from outside the car to the brake light and it still doesn't work. I was thinking that there might be a short in the existing wiring but it didn't seem to work.

It is driving me crazy!

Please help.

What kind of shape is the socket in. How are the springs under the little bumpers in the socket? Little bumpers is the wrong word but you probably know what i mean.

Yes I know exactly what you mean. It's perfectly fine. The bulb works and socket works perfectly. I forgot to mention that I switched the wires (from the steering column) from driver to passenger side, just swapped the lines to test to see if it would work and the brake light worked perfect when using the wires from the passenger side.

Do both rear turn indicators work correctly? Do the dash and front turn indicators work correctly? If you have current to the yellow wire until its under load, the contacts in the turn signal switch may be dirty/bad.
Good luck in your quest.

just went through the same issue on my truck, my passenger side had all lights but brake. I went through a bunch of things, but ended up being the factory connectors corroded under truck-under bed towards the rear. had green buildup. I took apart and cleaned with sandpaper and test light probe...do you know what connectors I am talking about? I can send picture if not...hope this helps, thats what fixed mine

So it turns out the turn signal switch is the issue. There is a 'sweet spot' where the brake lights work on both sides if I have the switch just barely pulled down towards the broken side. I will have to end up taking the steering wheel off and identifying if its just corroded or needs a whole new turn signal switch.

Lou if you need a new one try this part #B6C-13341-A. Repops go for ~60.00, NOS will be MORE.
Hopefully you can just clean yours up.

Once you pull the wheel off it isn't that bad of a job. You will need to fabricate or have some sort of pulling device to remove the wheel though!

How to remove steering wheel on a 1959 ford F100

I wanted to see if any one had some tips with removing the chrome cap in the center of my 1959 ford f100 steering wheel. I have the steering wheel removal kit, and there is not a horn on the steering wheel. I just wanted to see if there was a trick or what you guys have done in the past when removing the steering wheel.

You know, you may want to start another thread on this as this one is really about brake lights and quite old as well.
You have asked about removing the chrome cap in the center of the steering wheel yet you say there is not a horn? Kind of confusing. The center cap sure sounds like a horn button which is removed by pushing down firmly and then turning it. That will reveal the two threaded holes for attaching your steering wheel puller.
