can i remove the fan clutch for elec. fan

Hello guys i have a f250 2003 6.0l with 240,000 on her and i was thinking about removing the fan clutch? as for mine is dead and ford is telling me $500 for a new one w/plow pak.

can i do this and what is the pro and cons of this ? i do use the truck for plowing 24 lots and towing my g/n trailer 18,000lb and my Daily driver

thanks guys

i know this would make it easier to do some work on it and i could adj. the temp for when it comes on to if need be

Unlike most older-style fans which ran via a clutch which was effected by ambient under-hood temps (remember when vehicles regulary overheated in stop-n-go traffic with the a/c on) - the 6L's stock fan is electronically controlled (using a 'pulse-width-modulated' signal - not really going to work with anything else) by the PCM (computer), the desired speed of the fan is determined by a number of factors which include:
* a/c (or defroster on)
* coolant temp
* trans temp
* oil temp
amongst other things..

So, 'can' be done doesn't mean it would be good for your truck, since the PCM will protect you engine fluid temps FAR better than a simple electric fan.

Plus the stock fan can push/pull a LOT of air when required based on fluid temps getting close to the danger point.. The stock fan can sound like a JET engine when it's required to work hard.

I'm sure the stock fan can be bought from our site sponsor (automation - white bear lake, formerly tousley ford) and shipped VERY economically, and if you can install it yourself you can save lots of $$$.. (just google it, and call with perhaps you VIN # handy in case they ask.. tell them you are FTE for the discount, there is also a thread how to get over-night shipping for <$10 IF you can order on-line)..

Here is the link...

An electric fan won't even come close to moving as much air as the stock fan. I install electric fans on nearly everything, specifically the Lincoln Mark VIII which moves a ton air, but it won't move enough air for the 6.0.

Go pick one up from the salvage yard. I think I paid ~100 for mine when the fan ate the clutch wires.

Can I buy a fan with a lower set temp to come on at. I think the temp is to high for when I am pushing it. Yes the fan is great and moves allot of air and it cools quickly but I think if it came on 10 degrees cooler if would be better.

Once again there is more than just one parameter that controls the fan.

I suppose you could add an auxiliary pusher fan with a dedicated temp sensor.

Thanks for the reply, I was just figuring like on big trucks you could buy a sensor or something that would make the fan come on sooner. From what I am reading it looks like the only thing you can do is buy the snow plow fan and it probably runs the same but adds more at lower temps.

Here is a custom shroud and Lincoln MarkVIII electric fan for a 5.4 Superduty I made.

It's works really well for the 5.4 and V10 but no way jnwouldnuse it on a 6.0 unless I never hauled or towed anything. It moves 4500 cfm of air on high speed, but even then it wouldn't be enough on grades etc.

Being a puller I doubt there is space between the radiator and engine fan to install this. It would make a killer auxiliary fan if there were space though.

Can the fan parameters be changed with a tune?

When considering replacing the factory fan, look how huge this thing is!

The HD clutch fan runs hotter at highway speeds though. No free lunch in life.
