You wouldn't think they'd make a heavy duty pintle hitch and use a 3/4" shank on it...

But then, sometimes it's hard to figure engineers out.

Well, okay, most of the time it's hard to figure engineers out.....

Chevy Eater- speaking for engineers, a pintle hitch requires a smaller shank than a std hitch because of the down force of the pintle. An industrial grade hitch w/a 3/4 shank, properly torqued, will induce 12,000# horizontal force just by friction, w/o any further stress on the connection. W/o friction, the 3/4 shank has a safe working (shear) load of 40,000#. In other words those are the loads that the 3/4" connection can lift vertically.

ahh thats interesting SEH.well if it's a 3/4 shank then a 2" ball would only be rated for 3500 lbs so that's no good.now i see why PHY suggest ditching it and going with a receiver hitch.looks like that's the way to go then.i'll call up to the local welding shop to get a price quote.

Is the 3500# for a std hitch or a pintle hitch? These were quick calc's based on the stress induced by proper torque on the 3/4 shank. A safety factor needs to be applied for shock loads. Having not done any trailer work, I don,t know what the std is. I have worked on mobile equip, and grinding equip, there sf's range from 2 to 10. The numbers I gave would have a sf of 1-1/2 to 2, which I consider a nominal working, load. We have a couple of trailer supply shops in town, I will try to get out and see what sf they use, and what the hitch you described is rated at.

The 3,500lbs would be the ball rating.

SEH, no offense intended, I just like to poke fun at engineers at times. A lot of times what works on paper doesn't work in application.

F250, I may have misspoken, I missed where you said your new ball was 1 1/4 shank so I assumed you bought a 1" shank and it wouldn't fit making your old one a 3/4. That extra info made my post possibly irrelevant.

Interesting though, that's the first time I ever saw a 2" with a 1 1/4 shank. Up 'till now it's always 3/4 or 1 for 1 7/8 and 2" *****, the 1 1/4 shank comes into play with the 2 5/16" ball. Learned something new.

No offense taken. I was an engineer for 42 yrs., wasn't the first time. And I obviously didn't consider all factors.

yeah an awesome ball! and priced really good too! man.i dropped one right into my new cat 5 curt hitch on the chip truck when i installed that and i was good to go for whatever that truck should tow.

was hoping it was going to be just as easy on this truck and was bummed.
the hitch rating on the pintle hitch is stamped 8 ton (so 16k lbs) which would be perfect for anything large by screwing the larger ball back in.
sometimes things can't be easy though lol.

oh hey look.for under 100$ problem solved right guys?
bolt this in place of the one iv got and good to go.16k pintle rating as is with a 2" 10k ball ready to go without paying a welding shop for anything.

Pintle Hook Combo With 2" Ball Tow Ready Ball Mounts TR63011

and when i need the larger 2 5/16 ball,if it's not a pintle setup:
Pintle Hitch Ball with 2-5/16" Diameter, 14000 lb GTW - Chrome Tow Ready ***** 63052
(but i'll check to see what the ball i just took off isn't already the same thing)

it's perfect for what im looking for right?
(can it be this easy lol)

Here's some pics of the central hydraulic pump install.
The 1st two are on the F-Super:

*

These are on the parts truck. You can see the big bracket that mounts a couple of idlers, and that the pump mounts to a bracket on the alternator bracket:

tonight on log truck..........log truck turns movie theater! and rear view cam.

PIPEVISION Overhead Monitor w/DVD #VFDD-T701 & BOYO #VTK-350 Rear-View Night Vision Camera w/Shielded 35' RCA Coaxial Cable.Wired For Full Time Rear View Use.

well it was cold out this morning and i really didn't want to be out there lol so i sat around in here sipping coffee and checking out the pintle hitch setups for my plan of attack.the excitement got the best of me though when the man in brown showed up with the rest of the goods to install my back up cam,so i bundled up with 6 or 7 layers and headed out lol.a few pics are in the dark, cus i just came in.
here is an exact replica of what i did to my f250,though with a much longer run of rca cable.
so i installed the overhead cam,and since i now had grounds and switched power right up in the pillar for the gauges, there was little wiring work.the major of the wiring was running the hd shielded rca cable waaaaaaaay out to the rear.run her up and wire tied to keep it all up nice and of course inward of everything so that should a zip tie fail, the stuff still can't fall to the ground and get ripped out.
i then mounted the cam above the hitch and can keep an eye on behind me when backing up,and of course it's great because i wire the thing on,not with reverse but switched power,so i can see behind me as if it's a rear view mirror.real handy when towing to keep an eye on the trailers.brings great piece of mind.
though i don't have time for such things as watching dvd's while im working haha, these units are just affordable as the combo, for around a hundred bucks or so,for the monitor, cable, and cam combined.a small price to pay to be able to see,and of course it could save a life someday too.
so tomorrow,i just need to connect the cables to the cam.i had to run out for some heat shrink.so with that,i'll shrink the rca connections.one rca plug goes to cam for pic of course and another for power/ground.i'll tap into the rear junction box right there to see if i can find switched power (let me think here, the battery charge wire i guess it will be) along with the ground and then that'll be that.

Nice truck looks like your well on your way to getting it into top shape. Are you going to remount the tool boxes to the frame like the chip truck? Is that even a practical idea given where the hydraulics are mounted??
bumper to bumper, this girl measures just a couple inches shy of 25'! turning her around is a......chore.
I can sympathize my CCF350 with the service bed is a couple inches under 24' and the heaver trucks don't turn as sharp as the lighter duty ones.

Awesome truck and work. I have been thinking of back up cameras cause I haul trailers frequently from bumper pulls to goose necks so I've defiantly been thinking on em
