May need to grind/cut a hole in the adapter on tail housing on trans as one of the 205 shift pins will hit without the notch. Shift linkage will typically just require lengthening or shortening to your required length. Pretty trivial. You may have issues with the front drive shaft and your crossmember though. I expect the crossmember will get in the way and you'll need to make your own or modify the factory to clear.

Those 205's are heavy behemoths of transfer cases. I would seriously consider possibly adding a cross member or something to help support it too.

Cast iron case and full of gears. That's a lot of weight hanging off the back end of a tranny.

The factory crossmember will require zero modifications for driveshaft clearence. If you have a newer style trans such as the ZF5 you WILL NEED to support the NP205 somehow. I simply used a factory torque mount from the 78 I pulled the t-case out of and it's worked very well.

If you have an NP435 or C6 then just bolt her on.

Cadunkle, I see you have a 86 f250. There are more of theses old bull noses out there then I thought. Thanks for the info! The 205 I was looking at is a divorced version. So I am far from putting one in. Do you know if it is possible to convert a Divorced Transfercase To A Married Transfercase?

Hi Bruno2, I understand the weight issues, but you can't have heavy duty without heavy. The main purpose for this truck will be to clear acreage and hall rocks. So I figured it would be better to be safe then sorry. I bet I will take a beefy crossmember to keep things solid. Thanks for your help, jon

You can save a lot of work by just keeping the transfer case you have. They are strong enough to pull anything you can hook to the truck. You can say "I told you so" if you ever break it, but I doubt you will.

Hi Dave, I am beginning to think your right. Maybe it's not the case? I am hoping to get some time to look at it this weekend.

I think that divorced/married thing is going to be an issue.

You will need a 2wd tranny if you are going to use a divorce style transfer case. And also a much shorter rear driveshaft and a much longer front driveshaft and custom transfer case mounts/crossmembers.

I swapped a np205 into my 82, I had to modify my trans cross member, make a custom trans mount, get driveshafts lengthened/shortened and used the og 205 shifter bolted up and modified the linkage between it and the t-case to make it work.

I'm curious to know what made it necessary to modify the factory crossmember and trans mount with your NP205 swap. Was it driveline clearances?

I've also finished an NP205 swap and reused the factory spec crossmember and trans mount, both completely unmodified.

My f250 originally had the cross member with the extra plate and bushings between the two for the trans mount. The parts truck that donated the idi and axles is the cross member I ended up using because it had a better drop section to clear the np's massive drop. I then made a custom mount for the new cross member because the trans bolt holes sat offset to the 91 cross member, made the mount out of some 1/2 inch plate and thick walled 2 inch square tube.
