2005 5.4 to 6.8 swap

I'm interested in doing a v10 swap into my 05. Every thread I've read regarding this has gone down the "not worth the time, or just get a diesel" paths. I have my reasons for considering this, so please keep this strictly technical. Plus most info I've found pertains to 2v trucks.

So I found an 05 truck with a v10/6 speed combo for a good price. (Mine is 05 5.4/auto) Added bonus is that it has the CC/tilt column that I sorely miss in my truck. The 6 speed appeals to me because this truck sees 95% highway, and I don't put on enough miles to warrant a diesel. And I like manual transmissions for what I do.

The only questions I have are these:
What needs to stick with the v10 electronically? Just the PCM? If so, does that affect the odometer that appears on my dash?

And how about swapping instrument clusters? I'll want to put my v8 into the donor truck, so it will be important to have the gear selector in the cluster for that truck. (Naturally my auto column would go with it).

Mechanically, I'm not too worried. I've done goofy projects like this on smaller, more cramped vehicles, so I have a good idea on what to expect.

Thanks for any input,
Matt

You'll need the wiring harness, too. The PCM doesn't keep track of the mileage, so the odometer will not be affected. The MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor) might be different, I'm not sure.

I'm not answering your instrument cluster questions because I don't know the answers.

The complete wiring harness under the hood, donor PCM, as far as I know. You might need to adjust the cross member and use the manual truck driveshaft if it's the same configuration. If your converting it to manual you will need to modify the floor as the manual is taller.

Yes, wiring harness isn't a problem. I would never attempt something like this without a donor vehicle.

Interesting about the trans tunnel being different. It's not the end of the world, but definitely good to know about.

Thanks

Bumping this back up. I just found what should be a more suitable donor. An 05 parts truck with a v10/auto.

I just want to verify, that in this case, all I need to swap out is the engine, wiring harness and pcm, right?

I've read that the v10 uses a stronger auto transmission, is there any truth to this?

Thanks for the help.

The V10 will have more clutch plates than the 5.4 trans. Also the V10 has a dual core radiator and the 5.4 has a single. You will also need the V10 fan shroud..

Both transmissions are 5R110 TorqShift transmissions. The V10 transmission is stronger than the 5.4L.

Thanks for the info about the trans and radiator. Luckily I'll be getting both of those items.

Any difference in transfer cases? Both trucks are fully manual 4wd.

Fox,

Will you be parting out the donor truck. I'm looking for a full manual Tcase, linkage, and shifter components.

Yes, we'll see if I get the truck and take it from there.

Thanks, even if I get this truck, I may not get started for a while, but I'll keep you all updated.
