Transmission/TPS issue?

This is my first post, but I've been a casual observer for about a month now.I just bought my first truck, a 99 F350 SRW V10 Super Cab 2wd Automatic 70k miles.

I have no legitimate need for a 1 ton truck, but it was in better shape and cheaper than many of the 1/2 tons I test drove.

My problem. I took it on its first road trip this weekend from Charleston WV to south of Pittsburgh, PA and back (read mountainous). She ran like a champ on the way up, but on the way back I had one small hiccup. Cruise set at 75 up a long uphil (rained the entire way), it kicked the cruise off and slowed down. When I gave it gas, the Revs went up, but it still slowed. It slowed to about 60, and then all went back to normal. It did this twice about half way through my 3 hour trip. I stopped for gas, and let it sit for about 1/2 hour while we ate, and it didnt do it again.

When I stopped I checked oil and tranny fluid, both were fine. Fuel was likely just under half tank (fuel gauge stuck on full).

Any ideas what could have caused this? Engine sounded fine the whole time, it was almost like it jumped into neutral for a few seconds. Tranny shifted fine all the rest of the time.

Thanks in advance.

I have to bump this as she did it again.

Same trip. Problem occurs when I'm cruising around 75MPH and want to accelerate. If I put the pedal to the floor (or just try to accelerate to pass someone), the Tach appears to want to climb, but the Transmission doesn't downshift. The truck doesn't sound strange or anything, just slows down until you take your foot off the gas and everything goes back to normal.

Could this maybe be a fuel issue? Anything would help.

hmmm... Very odd to me, first I heard of the symptoms you described. I am sorry nobody has had any input either...yet. From what I see, it's been months since the last "hiccup". Did you happen to check for codes? May be something pending in system.
I don't have any experience on V10's, I am going to treat it like any other gas engine for now. Hopefully extracting info will also help keep this thread bumped

You may have to take the truck to a reputable repair shop/dealer where they can "scan" for transmission error codes (not auto-part stores , their scanners do not read tranny error codes ). Even if there is no CEL light currently on , there should be tranny error code(s) , if anything wrong with it .

Good luck,

Than you both for the replies. Yeah it has been a while, but not even 1000 miles, I'm very near my new job and I rarely see highway driving.

This last occurance made me think it had to do with fuel because of how it did it at WOT, but I'll probably get to a shop sometime this week.

unfortunate update... Made the same drive again Friday night because I live in the area affected by the West Virginia chemical spill. But during the trip, the truck did it again but worse and culminated in a blinking OD light. It was late at that point so I had it scanned at the autoparts store the next day (the local Ford dealer couldnt until Wed?!) and got P1728 (Transmission Slip Error Code). I replaced the fuel filter because I'm sure it needed it anyway and after some reading decided to hope that it was a generic enough code that the FF may have been the cause.

It's not. Drove to the inlaws house in the mountains and clugged along at 20mph up the steep portions. Anytime the tach goes above 3k rpm, it slips and the truck slows. Of course by this time everywhere is closed, and in PA everything is closed on Sundays.

Not looking forward to a potential Transmission replacement...

There's probably a reason it was in better shape, yet cheaper than the 1/2 tons. Being a 99, the clutch discs could be worn out. Especially if you're slipping without being loaded down. If you can find some nice flat ground, floor it from a stop. Put it through it's paces. Watch your tach as the trans shifts. If it hesitates and you see a jump in RPM's while it shifts, your clutch plates are slipping. I'm not familiar with what trans options come with the v10, but you should be able to find a heavy duty rebuild kit comparible in price to a OEM from Ford. Sun Coast is one reputable aftermarket transmission company.

I just changed the fuel pump today, Solved the problem

Who's stupid idea was it to put the fuel pump inside the tank, and worse yet, on some fragile retainer on the bottom of the tank (which broke)... Even worse.. why on earth does Ford want $1300 for a new tank?! Keeps junkyards in business I guess...

wow! That's insane! That dealer was just trying to make money.... I had to swap out a gas tank on a F650 diesel, tanks aren't the same but what a difference....it cost about $400 after tx and it also included the pump from dealer!.... Glad to hear issue is finally resolved though.

I would still suggest a complete tranny flush and new internal filter. With the pan down, add a Transgo Tugger Shift kit that will replace alot of the bogus plastic parts and add a much better firmer shift. The Transgo kit sells for around $100 and worth every penny.

I actually went through a tranny rebuild before the fuel pump. It threw the transmission slip error code, but still acted up after the rebuild. New fuel pump, she runs like a champ.

Yeah I didn't believe the dealer when they said a tank would be that much.
