Ford Expedition 2001 2wd Steering Play HELP

When the Car is off. The steering wheel has about 1/4 inch Play. Pure free play no resistance. When i turn on the car there is hydraulic resistance, So i know its not the column.. So i was wondering if this is normal play for an expedition. I have already adjusted the steering box, and it did reduce the play, because it used to be a full inch in play. However the box is really tight and it over steers and does not come back to center because its so tight. i need to loosen it up. So it will be more then 1/4 Play after i loosen it up again. SO IS THIS NORMAL. Any other Expedition owners out there...Experience this..

Sounds like you need a new steering gear box, yours is worn out.

Diagnosing this ain't rocket science. All you have to do is observe the gear's input shaft, connected to the steering wheel, and the output shaft, connected to the Pittman arm. Observe the relationship between movement of the input to the output. If there is a lag between the input and the output, it's due to excessive internal wear in the gear.

Adjusting the preload is a dangerous Band-Aid as it changes the off-center loading and can cause severe over-steer and a failure of the steering to return to center.

Yes you do need to loosen it back up a bit. It's rather dangerous if the vehicle won't return to a straight line driving position when you let go of the steering wheel.

MEGA QUESTION: if my system is evo, what happens if i put a non evo gear box on the car, I cannot find answer to that..

Please help...

Is my Expy evo or non evo
If evo can i convert..
