Neutral Safety Switch

Neutral Safety Switch
I put a new steering collar on my '69 F100 Ranger Automatic shift. I put everything back together and now it won't make a sound when I try to start it. It acts like the neutral safety switch is not letting it do anything. What could have happened to cause this? I didn't remove column just the wheel and collar.
How does that safety switch actually work anyway?

A couple things to check, try moving the gear shifter to see if it will start. Check the switc to see if a wire came loose. It looks very similar to the gear selector, and has to be over the P or N to allow starter contact.
I don't use one on my truck. It will start with the selector anywhere. I know this and it's not a problem as I'm the only one that is allowed to drive it.
