Cost From Dealer For Plug Replacement 5.4

I have a 5.4 Triton in my 98 truck and was wondering if anyone knew what Ford charges for a complete plug replacement??? When they change the plugs do they do anything to the coil's or is it just plugs???

I'm sure they just change the plugs if you aren't getting any codes that one is bad. As far as what they charge? Probably and arm, leg and first born.. Seriously, I have no idea what they would charge.

We were told $150 from a trans shop for plugs and wires. The code is #5 is not firing. This, after replacing the transmission because the guy assured us it was bad now it's doing the same thing. You guys have to help me out here, what up with these engines. Wife just got it a couple of months ago, '97 F250 with 5.4L. I told her they guy had a screw loose. I mean $150 to change plugs???? I went out and took a good look and it's nothing like I've ever seen before. How do you do it?

Hey Old Cane,

Check out the 97-03 forum. Second thread down describes the process. You can also just call the dealer and ask how much and what their rate per hour is. Then you'll know; A) what the dealer charges and B) how long it should take- so you can compare quotes from different places.

Good luck
Tim

That was very helpful, thanks. Even right down to the bolt size. Nice.

My wife is wanting someone else to do it of course. NAPA wants $280+/- to replace plugs and $119 each to replace coils. Wow, now I feel like own a Rolls or something. Up to $1200 for a tune up. Why would anybody design something like this? Even the pros don't want to do it! First Ford I ever bought. I guess I used to be smarter than I am now.

The plugs last 100,000 miles and they are not that hard to change. Sure its different but the price should be 50-150 just about anywhere not including plugs.... coils have to come out to get at the plugs I'm sure there's a comunication error somewhere.

To answer the original post question..
Dealership Plug replacement:$48.00 for plugs...$100.00 labor.
Dealership Coil replacement: $120.00 for the coil....$90.00 labor.

Just had it done here in Missouri. May be different where you are.

Replaced the plugs on friend's same engine, it was a pain. I didn't feel like it with mine.

Shoot, the dealer quoted me $109.00 just to service the tranny at it's 30,000 mile interval. I about fell over. That's alot of money just to change the fluid and filter. Do the torque converters on these things have a drain plug? If not, you only get a few quarts when you drop the pan. This would make for alot of labor on their part.

I think that I wil do it myself and save bookoos of cashola. Jimmy

im not shure about the f 250 but on my expy there are no plug wires the coil is attached directly to the plug.. and yes it is very expensive to have any one chage them i shoped around and still payed 250 for the set.. and 75 for one bad coil.. for a total of 325.. hows that for expensive plugs.. hope yours are easier to get to..

Well I changed the plugs tonight I thought it was going to be harder than it was from what I read. Took about 2 hours and I was able to torque all the plugs. You have to be pretty skilled and I would not do it without a compressor and blow gun. You should be good with your hands with blindfolds on.
Cost me $23.00
