what is this sensor

Hey fellow ford people got a couple of quick questions what is the sensor located on top of the differential? What does it do? And what would it possibly act like if it was bad? Just curious Thanks Scrobbie

In your truck it is an ABS sensor. It sends a signal to the RABS module to control the ABS. If it was bad the ABS wouldn't function properly.

and even if it is working, the abs on the 88 truck usually don't work properly anyway.

i solved the abs problems by just bypassing the abs valve.
since i never had a vehicle with ABS before buying the 88, not having it did not effect the way i drive.
as it is, the only thing i own that has working abs is the crown vic, and i hate driving that, the brakes stink on that car. after i get the legs rebuilt this winter, the abs in that is getting bypassed too.

Thanks again for the info but I don't know where the abs valve is? Or how to bypass it.

it is under the driver seat area of the truck, mounted to the frame.
if the rears lock up it is either bypassed already or just not working anymore.
to bypass it you just disconnect the lines from the valve and hook the lines together.

Actually, he means the VSS sensor on top of the rear axle, right scrobbie?, this one works with the tone ring to send the speed reading to the speedometer and the E4OD (if your truck is equipped with it).

nope, he has an 88 so that is the abs sensor. VSS did not start until 92 when ford did away with the mechanical speedometer and cable
and went to the electronic speedometer with VSS.

you need to work on your super secret ninja moderator skills to know what type vehicle posters drive.

Lol... I thought any E4OD vehicle would have a VSS, and those trans have been in the F-150 since 1987 I think. Either then or in 1989, but definitely before 1992.

Hey Encho This sensor is right on top of the diff. The only vss I have that I know of is on the side of the trans. unless there is another vss. that I dont know about? I do have an AOD 4 speed tranny.

In mine it's dead on top, but then again, here in Venezuela, many Broncos came with a Dana 44 rear (including mine) instead of the 8.8, that should account for some of the differences.
