Timing and Carburation

Timing and Carburation
Hello all!
I have put the 8BA engine back into my 49 F1, and it runs great...with one exception...it idles a little rough and when I give it gas it dies. If I feather the throttle and get it above 1200 RPM or so, It runs like a beast. I have it timed by hand, without a light. I know it isn't perfect, but it is close enough that it shouldn't be doing this. I am beginning to suspect it may be the accelerator pump, since the carb was not rebuilt. I just wanted to get some advice, and see if there is any common problem that I may be overlooking. I am looking for your experience, since this is my first. Let me know what you think.

Couple of thoughts:
Have you ruled out issues with the fuel line? Clean tank and lines?
Is the carb adjusted properly - especially the float?
Are your vacuum lines sound and leak free? Bogging down under acceleration is a classic vacuum leak symptom.
I would start with the lines, clean and rebuild the carb, and check your soft vacuum hoses/connection points.
Good luck and let us know when you succeed.

1.Engine off
2.Remove air cleaner
3.Work throttle while looking down carburetor throat.
4.You should see two squirts of fuel discharged from near the top of the carb.
If no squirts, you are having a fuel delivery problem somewhere. First step would be rebuild the carb.
If you are experienced at setting the timing without a light, you may be ok. IMHO, nothing beats a light.

Timing is set, and carburetor is rebuilt. I am happy to say that the problem was fixed, and the timing was almost perfect when I set it by hand. My accelerator pump was SHOT! It has not sending fuel anywhere. A piece of the diaphragm had broken off and was clogging the flow. Glad I got it figured out. She runs like a beast now! There is still a slight delay, but it is very intermittent. I am starting to think that my vac. advance needs replaced. It has not been replaced to my knowledge. The hesitation is very slight now, and it feels more like the advance. Thanks for all the help guys!
