These 59ABs

Getting ready to pull the engine out of this new/old beast and see what I find.

I have read and seen where the engines are attached to stands sideways and not out the back.

Is this because the bell housing is cast into the block, and people feel it's too much weight to hang out there?

I do have a means to adapt my stand, but just wondered is all.

Thanks for any input.

You're correct...although many have stated they have never had an issue, the "wives tale" had to originate from some place

I know some places make the adapters, and didn't seem like a lot of money...I'll try to find a link when I get some time today, and post it for you.

Here's one from Reds headers, pretty sure I've seem the less expensive as well.

Engine Stand Adapter [459] - $99.00 : Red's Headers, Speed Equipment For Old Fords

And some info on the HAMB:

Thanks Mike for the quick reply, I did find one source called Stumpys

Stumpy's Fabrication Works : Home

But it seems it limits access to half the engine that way?

Maybe I will pull it before committing to buy one. I have put a bell housing on a flat head six and hung it out the end with no issues. One even got away from me and spun around, but did not do damage.

Thanks again.

That last pic from the HAMB looks like a sweet set up.

And maybe it does not limit access after all, only the exhaust port from one side?

These 59abs

I just ordered an adapter for a 59ab from Kurt Stumpf. Price was reasonable and his stuff comes with high marks from H.A.M.B. members. Also check out this home made adapter from Roseville Carl on the Flathead V8 forum:

I just recently used the engine stand adapter from Stumpys(Kurt Stumpf) for my 59A motor and had absolutely no problems using. The only thing it will interfere with on the side of the motor is the exhaust ports, which for assembly and dis-assembly is not an issue. The only thing you will have to do to it is to did a couple of small holes in it for the locking pin so it doesn't spin on you. I don't believe he put them in because not all pins will be the same size, IMHO. Very nice chunk of metal fab (blots included)for $65. I have a pic of it being used in me thread.

Yeah I saw that thread, great work, really.
My shortcoming is metal work. I am a pretty good wrencher, electrician, plumber, and innovator of ideas, but I lack in the metal work.
I am getting close to retirement, so I may take a class if offered somewhere so I can putts around my shop.

And I can see Kurt does do good work.
