Time Sert valve cover removal?

Well it looks like I am going to have to do a time sert repair to the number 2 cylinder on my wifes 03 navigator 32valve DOJC.
Has anyone done this? Does the vavle cover have to be removed or is it best to do so? If so is there a write up on how to remove it? I have been searching for awhile with no luck.
thank you

Just talked to the man that invinted the kit, and he says no I should not have to remove the valve cover. Just need to make sure valves are closed should be fine if the piston is bottomed out.

well thought I had it made today. I found a thread chase that would fit down in the hole. I thread it all the way in untill it got tight, and was thinking nice, but to no avail for some reason the plug will still not start in the hole.

You sure the plug is the correct size for tap you used?

Yes m14x1.25 matched up threads on the plug as well. I need a bore scope if I am that worried about it. It looks like I am going to have to open up that $390 kit after all. Thought maybe if I got that chase to work and I never seen the kit I wouldnt want to keep it and I would be able to send it back. Oh well. I should not have expected any other way.

Well the answer to the thread title is NO> you do not have to remove the valve cover to do a time sert repair. The kit is very nice. I took my time and it was pretty straight forward. I bought a bore scope to make sure the cylinder was free of debri. I was able to see a few pieces of the old rubber boot and was able to suck them out with the shop vac and some small pex line.
If anyone has any questions about the kit or how it is done feel free to shoot me a PM and I will share as much as I can.
thanks to all for the suggestions.

Glad to hear it went well for you. Yes the TimeSert kit is expensive, but it does save pulling the head.

definitely money well spent. Would hate to think about pulling a head. The valve cover looks bad enough. Bore scope was a nice investment for the repair as well. I think with the scope the kit the COP and the plugs. I have about $675 in it. Not sure what a stealership would charge to do the repair, but they probably would have helicoiled it anyway.

Even if the dealer charged you the $675, you now have the TimeSert kit and scope to show for it. Should another one blow out you'll be doing it for basically nothing.
