Question Parking pawl question

Hi all, i have a '90 F-350, 460 c.i. with auto trans. yesterday, i pulled into a parking spot, and park would not engage. the indicator on the column has been half a bubble off for some time, so i got under it to adjust it. with the linkage off, and shoved totally into park, still no go. i suspect that the parking pawl has let go. back in the '70's, when i was a mechanic in a shop, i rebuilt C-4's and C-6's, as well as other makers trannies. question is, can the pawl be replaced or serviced thru the pan?

Does your trans have OD? If not it's a C6 and if it does it's an E4OD. I'm not sure the answer to your question about access to the parking pawl but I suspect it is relatively easy to replace, I remember this being a common problem with some of these trucks.. one of my fathers E series vans had the same thing happen and I don't remember it being a big expense to have fixed.

Thank You, it does have O.D. I didn't think that it was going to be major, but hadn't been into a slush box in years, and was unsure of the new ones. plenty of standards though.

Check the park paw activating rod, it might have fell off/apart or broke inside the pan.

Yup... not much different from old-school stuff except instead of a governor and kickdown cable, it's got solenoids to control line pressure and shifting. A few sensors so the 'puter knows what's going on... still a basic 4spd auto trans inside though.

I always use the parking brake and don't trust that little piece of metal one bit!

E4OD parking pawl just got trickier

Well, my parking pawl problem just got messier. I pulled off the tranny pan, and all the linkage was intact. I pulled off the tail housing to see what was going on. it seems as though the thrust washer behind the pawl ring broke 1/3 out of it, and the short piece fell down and was stopping the pawl from engaging. I got the big piece out too, and it looks like the thrust washer cracked thru two of the slinger reliefs. OK, now the question is: is it possible to drop the back half valve body to be able to get into anything to release the tail shaft? if memory serves me from old C-6's, I'm into pulling the tranny and starting from the front pump back. ANY pointers??????

Hell, that sucks. Sorry to hear bout your broken parts. I hate it when a seemingly simple problem turns into a bigger one.

Yeah the tailshaft is the last bit to come out of the trans. Well... almost I guess. But you do have to tear the entire thing down to get to it.

No, It can not be changed from the pan. If it is a 4x4, that has to come off and the ext housing and there it is
