Motorcyles and Lawnmowers

Hey guys,

I'm looking to buy a used riding mower soon and having never owned one or worked much with one, I don't really know what to look for or be leary of. If anyone could offer some advice on model types, things to check out when buying, etc. I'd really be interested in hearing it.

Also, does $250 for a 1979 Harley Davidson Super Glide, not running, sound good? Seems like at worst I'd have to get a new motor or get one rebuilt.

My old college roommate is sitting beside me and she said her boyfriend wouldn't even buy it to work on it and he's at MMI in Phoenix right now. But then, I do have to add she doesn't like working on things or having things that need to be worked on so her opinion is probably biased. I really have no clue on either one. Just thought I'd write something since no one else has.

JD, go for the Harley, that's a pretty good investment. Just make sure the frame and crankcase serial #'s match the title. The top of the line mowers are the Cub Cadets or John Deeres, both are really solid machines and hold their values well.

Thanks bandit, I had decided to buy the Harley not very long after making that post. But just my luck, it had already been sold. It was too good of a deal to last. And I've heard good things about the Cub Cadet as well, probably going to look that way. Thanks again.

I saw a comparison on riding mowers and the cub was at the top of the heap along with Husky and of course JD but these all cost over 5000. You can go to wally world and get a murray for a little over 1000. It would depend on what you want to spend. I bought my murray 2 years old for 350 and it has been ok. This is my second summer on it and my lot is over 1/2 acre. Take out the buildings and parking and I still have to mow over 1/3 acre twice a week. I've had to replace the blades a couple times, the deck bearings once, the belts once and the battery 3 times. I finally had to bypass that safety switch the kills the engine when you get out of the seat because the kids would get off and forget to turn off the key. I plan to replace it next year with something a little more substancial and with a bagger.
If you ever see a Harley for that kind of money don't even hesitate once you are certain it isn't hot. Even not running the bike if complete would be worth a couple grand minamum

Good luck man!
